Gambhir's demotion: Yet another of Srikkanth's screw ups

So this dud K Srikkanth (or however you spell the git's name) has picked V Kohli as vc? And here I was, thinking Gambhir was the next guy in line, having defeated NZ 5-0, initially announced as captaincy candidate for WI, etc. etc. But no. The moron has appointed this Kohli as vice captain. The same bloke who is just a month away from cussing at the Sydney crowd and throwing a fit at his fans and whatnot. Pathetic IMO. I just pulled up Mr. Varilux's career statistics, and it says he averaged 29 something in 40+ tests. At this rate, Ishant Sharma is going to be chief selector in the years to come.

In India, there is no set tradition of the VC being the next skipper. Kumble IIRC was never the VC to Ganguly or Dravid. He was the VC to Sachin in late 90s but was bypassed by Dada as the skipper when Sachin resigned. Similarly VVS was Dravid's VC but Kumble replaced RD as the skipper.

Agree ... Its a joke that Gambhir wasn't vice-captain. At least in ODI cricket, he hasn't put a foot wrong and is a consistent performer who has captained India before. Don't get me wrong, Virat Kohli is a very good player and will be captain one day. However its still too soon for him.

I disagree, Gambhir has been out of form the last 2 test series whereas Kohli is someone we are grooming to be the next SRT, he didnt perform in all tests but has shown potential and if Dhoni stays for another 3 yrs in tests theres no reason to not give the captaincy straight to Virat who will have had plenty of experience. Plus as mentioned we dont know what Gambhir has done/said behind closed doors.

I do not understand how can Gambhir become captain of India. There is very little chance unless Dhoni resigns or selectors take a bold decision. Both Dhoni and Gambhir are of similar age and if we can groom Kohli for next captain, he can be ready in 2 years to be the captain and can also have a long tenure of 5-6 years rather than 2 -3 years which Gambhir may have by the time Dhoni is off. and Gambhir has to become captain, he can still become as he was VC before like in case of Kumble and Kohli will still be VC then. However, Graeme Smith is the recent example of becoming captain at an early age of 23 when a few people knew about him who is he.

Probably because of Gambhir's missing the windies tour due to injury after playing in IPL. Kohli's elevation to VC is way too premature.
Dont understand how is it premature? We have examples who became captain even younger than Kohli's age.

Its premature because he is having his breakthrough series as a batsman. Let him really get comfortable with his role in the team. Captaincy is a huge responsibility and I don't understand why you would want to burden one of your best up-and-coming batsmen with a leadership role. Its just silly and a typical knee-jerk reaction by the Indians.

Its premature because of Kohli's attitude. He has played brilliantly in the last 2-3 years but leadership is a different quality altogether. Let him settle down in the team, play for a couple of years more and see if he matures further as a player, then think about captaincy

I feel , in a country like India best player in the team should not be given captaincy at all.

But he has not become captain. He is just groomed as a captain. Look at Clark, how many years he spent as a VC?

I dont see any problem in his attitude till he plays his role well in the team and this is not the first time. He has captain most teams he has played for. He is aggressive and a fighter in his attitude. Ponting was similar when he made captain. And he is only become a VC not captain. It will take at least 2-3 years until Dhoni goes.

He is already settled down in ODIs and he is VC for ODIs.

The selectors in India are just dummies. They make selections so as to please the masses. I don't understand how Kohli will lead the team with his attitude now.
yes..we should have a non-playing captain.

Those of you saying that Gambhir won't be captain because he and Dhoni are of a similar age are daft. Dhoni is really really close to losing his test position, let alone his captaincy. I don't have any sources but he has to be. So Kohli, LOL, is going to be captain when that happens?

Dhoni is close to lose captaincy in tests but Gambhir is close to lose his spot in tests the way he played in Australia and we are not touring overseas next 2 years so both spots are out of danger, IMHO.
