Iran is home to the largest Jewish community in Muslim World There are plenty of differences within Islam - which is why Iran and KSA hate each others guts. Similar feelings of distrust run between them and Pakistan. India and Iran actively supported the Afghan Northern Alliance when the Pakis were supporting the Talib. Can't use the same scale to measure everything. Would be immensely proud if we don't skip and jump when Uncle Sam clears his throat each time. http://www.exploringgeopolitics.org/Interview_Ahouie_Mahdi_Iran_Relationship_China_India_Russia_Oil_Gas_Industry_Foreign_Direct_Investments_Economic_Technological_Cooperation_Ties_Trade_Balance.html

In political and security fields, the following is important: common opposition to the spread of Islamic Sunni fundamentalism in Central Asia common interests in the stability and reconstruction of Afghanistan limited military cooperation Iran’s need for India’s political support in the international arena reinforcement of India’s legitimacy in the Muslim world, as well as counteracting Pakistan in Kashmir through a possible expansion of Iran’s influence over the Shi’ite population of that region In economic terms, these factors play a key role: India’s need for Iran’s oil and gas (Iran is second largest oil supplier to India) Iran’s need to import refined oil from India for domestic consumption (more than 40%) the two countres’ interest in a rapid expansion of trade and economic links in recent years. For instance, Iran’s trade with India crossed US$13 billion in 2007, an 80% increase in trade volume within a year.

This political descision effect everyone at ground level. Think of it on simple levels. As an Indian migrant/entrepreneur/tourist which country would you rather have good relationships with? For all the faults of US, it's still the greatest country in terms of law&justice, governance, human rights, womens right etc...Iran has a long way to go in this respect. It is why US is the no.1 final destination for Indian migrants. Not sure if Iran is even an option.

That is just wrong at so many levels - how many migrants go to Afghanistan ? so we don't need to be friendly with them ? Why would political decisions have an effect ? Indians were going to the US to work and study even when we were under severe sanctions after the Pokhran tests. You think stopping Iran oil imports is going to increase the number of H1Bs allocated to us ? or that should be our platform for negotiations ? US is the land of opportunity - doesn't mean we love american life = support everything they ask us to do. Every self-respecting nation has its redline where it will not/should not yield to external pressure - be it signing the CTBT / freely floating their currency/changin long standing relations with other countries

I am not against stopping oil or at least reducing dependency on oil from Iran but then it has to be on our own choice and not based on US pressure. US cannot and should never try to dictate us what we need to do and what we do not need to do. They have never stopped providing aids or weapons to Pakis. So, why should we care. Secondly, we need to get oil from other sources at the same rates as Iran is providing for us to think in that direction (that too on our own choice and not on anyone's dictat). Thirdly, we have never had any security problems from anyone in the middle east and so, we should not be involved in that mess. Middle east mess is the worst mess to get into and harms the associated countries directly or indirectly in the long run. And to be honest, no country in that region or for that matter even the West is correct. Every country there and the West are only taking cheap benefits while harming people. And the people are not the smartest either and do not apply their brain well. that holds true even for US and the West and how they blindly believe everything their Western media tells them. Similarly, the people in the Middle Eastern countries are also irrational and cannot understand the reality and believe their leaders, dictators and their media blindly. So, we should only deal with Iran or any other middle east countries as in business and not much else unless it benefits us economically. Remain neutral and do not succumb to any sides. Use pure economical and logical reasons benefiting India as the only criteria to deal with them. As of now, it seems Iran is providing us oil at far cheaper rates and even without payment and on massive credits. Instead, they are willing to use our businesses and let them provide services and goods in return for oil. Not a bad trade and reminds of the barter system before paper money came into existence. And they are supposedly providing us oil at rates lower than other Arab nations. So, not a bad deal. And their barter system means that Indian businesses and thereby economy can also benefit. This might also mean that Indian companies might replace US companies in the Iran domestic market in the long run. In terms of business, it makes a lot of sense to continue the trade with Iran especially with the benefits they are willing to provide. They seem to be willing to take anything from us including setting up construction works, providing Indian products, letting Indian companies directly set up businesses in Iran and sell products etc. in return for oil. This means some serious business if you realize in the long and once this fiasco gets over. We will need oil even in the future and they will be habituated to Indian products by the time the fiasco gets over and Western countries again start dealing with them. So, it is quite profitable for us. Not to mention their supposed discounted oil which would also help us. So, not a bad deal by any means for sure. I always check economics and national benefit and I see good trading prospects while dealing with Iran. And what difference does it make if we are getting oil on such massive credit and I do not think other Arab countries are offering oil on upto several years of credit payment. And China is not stopping. And US does not have the balls to say anything to China or ever sanction them. The day US sanctions China, China will in turn sanction US and land them in the biggest mess of history as US economy is now bailed out to some extent by China to reduce their national deficit.

And how many times have US told India stopped dealing with Afghanistan??! but anyways lets be rational, India's bi-lateral trade with US is the 3rd largest overshadowing Iran by miles. It's not about self-respect it's about common sense. Why do you think the South Koreans and Japanese have started to look elsewhere, because their bi-lateral trade relationships with the US is too precious to put on the line. When India's have greater say on their global bi-lateral trade relationships then fair enough, until then it will continue to pay lip-service to those who dominate India's trade relations, i.e. USA. India exports to US: US$ 26 billion!!! India imports from US: US$: 20 billion India makes-up only 1.8% of America's total trade, boo hoo, Uncle Sam is not going loose sleep over this, but Indian economy will (US accounts 15% of India's international trade) India exports to Iran: US$ 2.7 billion :hehe: India imports from Iran: US$ 11billion There is too much gung-ho "self-respect" nonsense and no pragmatism. India might have survived decades of sanctions, but it hell for sure missed out on economic growth.

Infact there is too little self-respect, if pragmatism means bending over everytime then :haha: You talked so much about the trade figures .. with examples of US puppets whose existence is courtesy of uncle sam. With which country does the US have the biggest trade deficit ? - China . the same who till recently showed them the finger each time they were warned of consequences if the Yuan wasn't floated. They are showing real ambition in handling other powerful nations the way they are. US needs us more than we need them, strategically. How many nations can it afford to piss off in the vicinity of Afghanistan if it is staying there for another 10 years as is the plan.

But what about China? They are doing same. Why not sanction them too.. what is the total trade between the two.... Or Uncle Sam wants to fullfill energy demand of India with solar panels which he will import from China?

The US doesn't have much leverage over China goods. Because any sanctions on China will be just as disastrous for America itself. America's total trade with China make up nearly 20% of US overall trade. The US imports $500 billion worth of Chinese. Any ban on Chinese imports will send US economy into a freefall, with inflation shooting up overnight and not to mention shortage of essential goods. Also not forgetting China is also the largest holder of US debt and continue to finance US government expenditure through US T-bill purchases. US has been b!tching about the Yuan (China's currency) for ages, and demanding the Chinese float or at least appreciate it. But all the Chinese do is :finger:. This is why the US can so little to China in terms political gerrymandering. For India to get total freedom from US influence it needs to reduce that total trade with US from 15% to around 1%. Anyways today I am so pissed off at our bowlers incompetency, I hope the US government place sanctions on over trundlers:two_thumbs_up:.
