GENEVA: The UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution on Thursday urging Sri Lanka to "credibly investigate" allegations of violations during the war against Tamil Tiger separatists in 2009. The US-led resolution was adopted with 24 votes in favour, 15 against and eight abstentions. India voted against Sri Lanka on the resolution after pressure from political parties like the DMK and AIADMK on the issue. China, however, firmly backed Sri Lanka against the US-sponsored resolution at the UNHRC on alleged war crimes, saying it is against any country putting pressure on others in the name of rights violations. Tabling the resolution, the United States said Colombo had been given three years to hold its own investigations into allegations of serious violations, but "given the lack of action... it is appropriate" that the 47-member state council pushed it to do so. "An enduring peace will be unsustainable without meaningful steps to foster national reconciliation and accountability," said US envoy Eileen Donahoe. "It is a resolution that encourages Sri Lanka to ... make concerted efforts at achieving the kind of meaningful accountability upon which lasting reconciliation efforts can be built." Unlike in the immediate aftermath of the conflict when it staved off a similar resolution at the Human Rights Council, Colombo was unable this time to lobby sufficient support to defeat the Western-led move.

Good on India. Only fair in 21st century we behave like we live in 21st century. Also great to see Chinese side with Lankans. Should clear all the doubts on where Indian foreign policy attention should be.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said India's vote against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC was in line with its stand and wanted to ensure that concern was expressed to enable minority Tamils in that country to get justice. Singh also said India did not want to "infringe" on the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. "One has to weigh pros and cons. What we did was in line with our stand on Sri Lanka. We do not want to infringe on the sovereignty of Sri Lanka but concerns should be expressed so that Tamil people can get justice and lead a life of dignity," he told reporters here.

Its always a game of math, who'm you side with and who are you pissing off. Maybe this time, siding with USA & local regional sentiments mattered more than going purely by the Lankan embassy's request.

yess actually it also good for us . now sl can stop import your cheap products like vehicles ' date=' bicycles[/quote'] What/Who was stopping you earlier  Weren't your leaders free to decide what's best for your country until now ?

Foolish.. Never interfere in another country' s politics.
This is not interfering, its a UNHRC resolution. Its not like we're taking sides in SL by spending money or planting a govt.

Yea, right, instead of agreeing to investigate allegations of war crimes, you want to stop import of goods. As long it helps your country prosper, go for it. :two_thumbs_up:
