Ram Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 What the Pune puppies dont realize yet is that Saurav Ganguly is their biggest liability in this tournament. No disrespect to Ganguly, the man's an all time-great who deserves to kept in a pedastal, but as far as T20 goes, he has no business being in this format at all. People often forget - Ganguly was actually dropped from Indian ODI side for scoring at too slow a pace and being a general liability on the field. How can a man dropped from an ODI team generally consisting of out-of-shape athletes, be part of a high-voltage, high-octane T20 format where the fielding standards are even higher due to the presence of 4 internationals? :hmmmm2: and its not like we havent seen Ganguly play T20s. In his 3 years at KKR, apart from the sporadic spurt with the bat, he really was not delivering at all. His performance in KKR was un-inpiring that Shah Rukh Khan was forced to ditch the symbol of Bengali pride from the T20 team based in Kolkata, and go for younger names in the 2nd auction. The turnaround in KKR's performance since last year is bleeding obvious. So to summarize - Ganguly was too slow to be part of the Indian ODI team in 2007/08. And during the 2010 auction, not only was he ignored by Kolkata, his home state, but not a single team bid for him. That is how bad people thought he was. He managed to work his way into the Pune team using his connections, just like the way he managed to work his way into the Indian team in 2007, despite not moving a stone in FC cricket all of 2006 (he did end the year 2007 as the leading run-scorer in test cricket, so kudos to him for that :hatsoff:). But people expect him to lead his team to victory in 2012? Stop dreaming. :headshake:

Ganguly definitely is the best proven thinker of the game within their team and has proven his motivation skills in the past. From the captain's perspective and even the teammate's perspective, he seems ideal. But the only issue is that in T20/IPL, a captain's individual performances should always set the examples for others to follow. He is never going to do well but for Pune he is their option available.

Dude, captaincy is much over-rated in T20. The shorter the format gets, the less control the captains have on the game. Plus, he is coming in at the all-important no.3 spot and gently plodding along. Just look at the some of the other no.3s in the tournament Pietersen, Raina (IPL's most prolific bat), Kohli (India's best batsmen right now), Rohit sharma etc. Pune's other batsmen are always under pressure to compensate for his slow scoring.
