At this point 2-0 in favor of Gayle in the last 2 years when Malinga was up against Gayle. He couldn't stop him. tomorrow he has another chance to have a crack at Gayle.

Its not like he tried to smash him off and succeeded, He just played away his overs.

^ Absolutely but the obsession of Indians with batting means he would get fewer votes in this poll than most batsmen.
No matter what the format, it's the bowlers who win you matches. A team with quality bowling will generally get the better of a team with better batsmen.

Isn't that enough? Malinga is supposed to remove their ace player which he failed twice.

And if not for Malinga, Mumbai would have struggled to even get past 7th spot in any IPL. World class bowlers put additional pressure on the batting team as the batsmen know that they can't do much against that bowler and so take more risks against other bowlers thus helping other bowlers take wkt as well.

(repost) Select malinga' date=' and then select other destructive batters like Sehwag, Warner, Watson :hmmm:[/quote'] Teams that have won IPL had neither Gayle nor Malinga.. Technically nobody needs either of them. Team that has won twice has Albie Morkel as their opening bowler :cantstop: . At the end of the day big names don't mean anything if they don't deliver. For MI he is a vital cog. Without him they are sh**. But other teams he is not that important.

Its a correct assessment if you're talking about tests, but if its shorter format, you need a good batting lineup to win more often than not.

Gayle for all his fuss always faltered in the big matches right through his career. So Malinga for me and also players like Pieterson and Hussey are much better T20 players than Gayle IMO.Even if they arent as destructive as him they produce with similar consistency and in big games.

Disagree. Gayle singlehandedly took RCB from 7th(?) position to 2nd when he joined the squad with just more than half the league matches remaining. I don't think any other player is capable of doing that apart from maybe Warner. His supposed failure in big matches.. 2011 Qualifier: 8 (4) 2011 Eliminator: 89 (47) 2011 Finals: 0 (3) Must win matches 2011 CLT20 v Somerset: 86 (46) 2011 CLT20 v SA: 26 (15) SF: 2011 CLT20 v NSW: 92 (41) Finals: 2011 CLT20: 5 (12) Average: 43.71 And, don't even talk about his lack of consistency. You don't get to hold the Orange Cap twice in two successive years without being consistent.

Gayle is definitily a quality T20 player...one of the best. But he is not the type of batsman who can play according to the situation. Its either fireworks, or no fireworks.

I wudnt pick narine. The only reason narine looks effective because he plays in Eden where spinners get 100% favour whil malinga doesnt get any purchase from the Indian pitches.

Malinga rarely depends on surfaces. His strength is accurate full pitch bowling and variation of pace. But it has been proven you can play him out if you want to play him out. But lot of guys couldn't even play Naraine out.
