BCCI confirm benefit of $13m to ex-players

The BCCI has confirmed that they will make a one-time benefit payment to certain former national and domestic players, amounting to approximately Rs 70 crore ($13,050,000 approx), in recognition of their services to Indian cricket. The decision was made at the board's Working Committee meeting in Chennai today. N Srinivasan, the BCCI president, had first announced the board's plans to make these payments at the opening ceremony of the ongoing IPL. "I would like to say that from the proceeds of the playoff games of the IPL, the BCCI will give a one-time benefit to those [players] who have graced Indian cricket - international as well as those who have played domestic cricket for a long time," Srinivasan had said. "This is a small thank you to those who have done yeoman service to Indian cricket." Players who have retired before the 2003-04 season are eligible for the payment, adding up to around 160 cricketers in all. The payments will be made in seven categories, with the top payments going to players who have played more than 100 Tests. Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar fall under this category, and will receive Rs 1.5 crore ($280,000 approx) each. Other retired Test players, depending on the number of games they have played, will get between Rs 1 crore and Rs 35 lakhs. Domestic players who have played 100 and more first-class games will be awarded Rs 30 lakhs, while those who have played 75-99 first-class matches will get Rs 25 apiece. • 75-99 Tests, Rs 1 crore: GR Viswanath, Syed Kirmani, Ravi Shastri
• 50-74 Tests, Rs 75 lakh: B Chandrasekhar, Mohinder Amarnath, S Venkataraghavan
• 25-49 Tests, Rs 60 lakh: Erapalli Prasanna, Salim Durani, Maninder Singh

Why not spare the rich cricketers and distribute more money to the less fortunate ones. I guess this is not a need based payout, but i wonder if it is necessary to begin with. Doesn't the BCCI have a pension plan in place?

Good initiative by BCCI. Older cricketers hardly got a fraction of what today's youngsters earn. so its apt that the BCCI gives them a piece of the pie too.

Dude, Badri and Vijay are making in excess of 3 crores each per season. If you want to feel sorry, you should include those playing in the IPL without an auction or retention money and playing for $50k and $60k, the likes of Rahul Sharma and Rahane.

I hope BCCI looks after cricketers like Prasanna, Chandrashekhar etc., i.e. the guys who were not able to make much money from the game or players who are in financial distress. There's not much point in gifting money to the likes of Gavaskars, Shastris or Kapils. I am sure even these players will understand in case their share of the money is trimmed in favor of helping out the former cricketers who are in much more need of the money.

Not BCCI's charity... This is a gesture at rewarding their efforts to Indian cricket and test cricket. There has been an objective criteria (no. of tests) set.

If Gavaskar or Kapil feel like it, they could offer their share to other players. This is not charity show - this is reward for contribution to Indian cricket.

Nice gesture. They cant exclude guys like Sunny for being 'super rich' as Precamb says theyve done it out of their skill at commentary etc...great that long serving FC players get rewarded
