It appears that Gates has taken upon himself to school these fkers on the nobleness of giving. But I bet that these attendees were simply there to take pictures with Bill Gates. These fkers dont even realize that Buffet/Gates spend a lot of their money on Indian Projects. NEW DELHI: Dozens of India's wealthiest individuals huddled together on Friday to discuss philanthropy in the first such gathering of its kind in the country. Without any overt pleas for charitable giving, the nearly 50 men and women who attended the event were given a glimpse of the crying need for extra help in areas that are vital to India's development. The event, a brainchild of Wipro founder and philanthropist Azim Premji, is a subtle, carefully-crafted attempt at catalysing charitable giving by rich Indians. The media was shut out so that the discussions could be frank.{The real reason is after the event robber barons didnt want to face questions from media on how much they decided to donate} And it was made clear right in the beginning that the invitees were not obliged to commit any money to charitable giving.{So it required an assurance from Premji ki Bhayya abhi kuch mat dena bus baat suno} The event, with a session each on education, healthcare, water and agriculture, was co-hosted by Premji, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Tata group chairman Ratan Tata. Gates, who along with billionaire investor Warren Buffett has persuaded dozens of Americans to pledge the majority of their wealth to charity, spoke about the imperative for philanthropy, one of those who attended the event said on condition of anonymity. Gates, this person said, spoke about how history has shown that leaving behind wealth to serve good causes is better than letting offspring inherit it. {This bit got to be the worst indictment on the type of people we Indians are that a foreigner has to repeatedly drill down into our brains} Among those in attendance were Analjit Singh ( Max India), Anil Agarwal (Vedanta , Anu Aga (ex-Thermax), Cyrus Mistry (Tata group), Cyrus Poonawalla (Poonawalla group), GM Rao (GMR group), GVK Reddy (GVK group), Hemendra Kothari (DSP group), Kiran Mazumdar Shaw ( Biocon), Kris Gopalakrishnan (Infosys), M V Subbaiah (Murugappa group), Nandan Nilekani, Naveen Jindal (JSPL), Nimesh Kampani ( JM Financial), Omkar Kanwar ( Apollo Tyres), Vallabh Bhansali (Enam), Sunil Bharti Mittal ( Airtel) and VG Sidhartha (Cafe Coffee Day). One of the main messages was that it is possible for individuals to play a big role in transforming society. Also, while the government has a number of schemes aimed at the poor, improper implementation means that the gaps remain largely unfilled. One of the suggestions was that the government and wealthy individuals could co-create schemes with a structure that ensures the proper delivery of services for the poor. Do you know how much robber barons like Ambani subvert, exploit the law to make those billions. If there was rule of law in India like America may be Ambanis would still be selling sarees going door to door on their bicycle. Anyway Bill Gates is urging them to donate a significant portion of their wealth "now". Like 50%/80% which will motivate others to donate for public welfare since in India kids are ***ing nanga and going to bed hungry.

There's statistical evidence in this regard where we rank way behind. Then there's the idiocy of 'donating' to build a structure devoted to a religion/cult. Unless the god/goddess drops by in that structure to help the needy (which never effin happened), its not charity. BTW what's this emphasis on billionaires all the time ? How about us, the middle & upper middle classes contribute additionally to society as well ? We do hold a huge amount of wealth collectively in our bank accounts, investments, gold & whatever, right ? Wouldn't that make a bigger difference ?

Also, its very easy to think that no one need more than a million dollars, or ten millions or a billion. I have learnt it the hard way that money is never enough. As you come up in life, the cost of maintaining that status increases propotionaly. Thats why even multi-millionaires who dont invest wisely go bankrupt Also how many of you donate any amount to charity at all? at about 10% of your ealth? WhThe billionaires wealth is private wealth just like ours are. They have no more obligation to donate than you or I Look at the way our middle class spends obscene amounts in weddings, etc. Cant that money go to charity? Isnt that a shameful waste of money? Easy to preach others I guess

E.g. cricketers should play for pride and not for money in IPL, billionaires should donate their money to charity. Its great if rich people donate money for social causes like Buffett and Premji are doing, but they arent really bound to do so.

IMO, the best charity is the one which empowers the other person for life and not temporarily. Also, there's no need to be out in the open doing charity. I am absolutely sure that folks like Tendulkar will have charities and will do so quietly rather than creating "awareness".

So now the weight of over 50 million hungry and clothless children is the responsibility of 15 or so rich unelected persons! This is call of charity highlights the failings of government to provide the fundamental rights to food, shelter and education.
