If Bhupathi or Bopanna had automatically qualified on their own they could have had a say. Otherwise team based rankings are only alternate scenario rules, so in essence Paes carries his partner with him to the olympics. In any case Leander has actually brought laurels for India (Davis cup and Olympics) whereas Bhupathi has only been successful in the professional stage. I would trust Leander's commitment over Bhupathi's any day.

His Dad said on news channels that Leander didn't partner with Rohan in the past coz he wasn't a strong contender then. But he wishes to partner Rohan now for he is in good form. So what this effectively means is that Paes, under the garb of national interest, is wanting to pair up with a player who he thought wasn't worthy of playing alongside him 2 years back. He is also trolling Mahesh here by stating his preference to play with Rohan. On the other hand, Bhupathi has played with Rohan when Paes did not. Bhupathi guided him, teamed with him, played tournies with him. Rohan is bound to side with Mahesh, who backed him when he needed it. And for Paes to now suddenly play the "national interest" and "I'm first so I get to choose" card is just petty and stupid. Shame on you, Leander.

But it is immature to cry in front of media.

I never passed any judgement on who is right/wrong here - when both sides of the story, and most likely will never know. I just said, the way Bhupathi handled the matter in front of media - is childish. If you were referring to change of opinion, not wanting to play 2 years back - to - willing to play now - vs same opponent... I see nothing wrong in that.

BTW, all these conversations should not have come out in front of the whole world, it could have easily been done in a meeting called by AITA.

We'll be ensuring that indian pair goes out of competition in first round itself. Individual doubles rankings mean zilch in doubles. You need to be rated as the team. There is no reason for AITA to break-up settled partnership of Bhupati and Bopanna or Bhupati and Mirza. Leander Paes is real crybaby in this episode.

Not true according to what the newspapers say.....he said if Bhupathi and Bopanna don't want to play with him then he will play with the next highest ranked player but not with someone who is ranked very low.He would rather pull out which is fair because partnering a very low players gives him no chance of doing anything in the games....might as well pull out. It is only fair that if two teams are going then the best four make those teams and not best three with the fourth being the some very low ranked one.What chance does the second team have?Why should the top most player be made to form a weak team with a weak partner. As for Sania....The sania Leas pairing will get a direct entry while Bhupathi sania pairing will not.AITA has recommended the sania paes pairing . For me Leander paes represents Indian Tennis.Bhupathi has always been the brat with his personal interests coming first.Unfortunately he has taken Rohan Bopanna down the same path. This is also probably leander's last olympic games......sad that bhupathi decides to be such a bi#@# about this whole thing.

I have not heard of any ego problem between doubles partners in any other country due to one of them being ranked higher than the other.
