Have we given up on Raina-the test batsman

I am sure that he will come in for Tests and probably playing XI in for Virat Kohli at no. 5.
when, for which tests? currently Rohit is ahead in the queue & once Gody retires it will be Rahane / Rayadu...

if India play with 6 batsman, then who knows Raina may come in ahead of Yuvraj/Rohit, but if India play Jaddu as alrounder, then noway Raina will cut it above Kohli/Gody unless he opens the batting:winky:

There is no point playing Jaddu as a all rounder at home as one bowler will get underbowled anyways if there are 3 spinners. His batting is dodgy against quality pace anyway. Play him as a spinner or drop him.

Forget the old article... this is from yesterday in NDTV

Dharamsala: He has relished the role of a finisher in one-dayers but given a chance, Suresh Raina won't mind batting higher up the order as he believes it would give him a chance to plan his innings better and make a comeback in the Indian Test fold. "Definitely, I would like to bat higher up the order, If I am given a chance, I would like to give my 100 per cent as it will also give me an opportunity to play more overs. I have enjoyed batting at No 5,6 or 7 where you need to bat till the finish," Raina told mediapersons here on the eve of the fifth and final ODI against England to be played on Sunday. India have already pocketed the series by taking a 3-1 lead. For someone, who has been an indispensable part in India's ODI scheme of things, Raina has a Test average of less than 30. But the left-hander is still hopeful of making a comeback in the Test fold. "If you talk about my Test performance, I scored a 50 in one of my last three innings. I believe that I can make a comeback in Tests," the 26-year-old stated. That he is eyeing a Test slot in the Australia series became evident when he stressed on the importance of doing well in the Irani Cup to be held from February 6-10. "Yes, Irani Trophy will be very important but at this point, I want to focus on doing well in tomorrow's match. Although, we have won the series, it would be nice if we can finish with a 4-1 margin."

Looked at his test career, in 29 innings, he's already scored 6 ducks! thats a duck every 5th innings This is his last test innings- Team chasing 261, 166/4 what does Raina do? An ugly cross batted swipe to gift his wicket for a duck 43.1 Patel to Raina, OUT, rush of blood from Raina and he too perishes! Patel is so much more effective when he tosses it up, Raina like Sehwag was down the track in a flash, he made room as well and the ball landed on middle, held its line and pushed back the middle stump

problem is people like Raina get easy PR when a more deserving Vineet Saxena/Robin Bisht hardly get any to stay on in the front pages of ICF

Rahane hasn't done anything to prove his talent. Why are people having orgasms with his FC records? Raina on the other hand :hail:. Has very little natural talent but is extremely gutsy and a team player.

:hysterical::hysterical: Raina is probably one of the best timers of cricket ball in the indian team currently.

and the point is? Natural talent is what Rohit and Rahane have. they can be lazy *****es at the crease and still lean forward and play out of the book drives. Dhoni and Raina is brute force and instinctive batting

I said raina is one of the most talented strokemakers in the indian team.He is not brute force like dhoni but its all timing .Be it frontfoot or backfoot drives he is great to watch on song. His problem is his defence and short pitch bowling.Which can be worked upon .

17 Test matches 7 50s 1 100 I think there is room for improvement. Rahane hasn't played any tests so you can't really say that he'd be the next Tendulkar.

That's not a great record when you consider that many of those runs came on Srilankan Batta's too. And Rahane deserves chances. There is a huge difference between next Tendulkar and Raina. Rahane will be hopefully somewhere in between. Raina had his chance missed it. Even in FC his record is pretty average.

17 tests, 29 innings., 6 ducks, an ugly hoick in his last test innings.. And the worst part is he has got out to spinners s many times. Doesn't have a defensive game when the spinners are on top, looks to play the ODI shots and throws his wicket..very similar to how Yuvraj's test career has panned out. Both have had enough chances in tests and how they play in ODIs should have no impact on them playing tests anytime sooner. They both need to go back to FC cricket and hit lots of runs consistently (not an isolated 100 or 200 in domestic cricket or some runs in ODIs and be back in the side like what has happened so far).
