His identity was part of society where if someone question your bravado, they would say " apne aap ko darasingh samajtha hain kya". I remember as kid when our taxi was stuck in traffic outside the wrestling theatre in Mumbai, I read this huge banner and poster "Dara Singh vs xyz" Although for me, I had to take another loss. Our old family friends son in New York ( I grew up up with him ), a 33 year old, smiling man with a young wife and 2 daughters aged 1.5 and 6 months died of liver and kidney cancer. He never drank or smoked in his life, was pretty active and also played baseball. Father has prostate cancer and grandmother died of blood cancer, quite rich and well to do family all torn apart by this tragedy, born in US but very much Indian in culture

He was part of the old akhaada mindset but managed to merge very well with modern society. I cant say I ever saw him ticked off, he was always smiling, always encouraging. Legend in true sense of the word.

I wonder how many here are familiar with Jairaj, another body builder and probably Hindi film industry's first ever action hero - from the silent film era. Jairaj almost ruled for about a decade, then Dara Singh became the truely popular action hero. There were not many others n the old days, till of course Dharmendra came and action & body building became fashon among heroes and fans.

Remember the scene from Golmaal where a mota Marwari type says - Arre sahab Helen ka dance aa gaya magar mujhse phir bhi nahin reha gaya, aap kahte hain unki jaroorat mujhse jyaada thi? Thinking about it now when Dara Singh played Hanuman he would be well into his 50s and perhaps even 60s but boy he seemed atleast half that age. It also reminds me of an interview where Naseeruddin Shah was having a go at Amitabh Bacchan, claiming AB never made koi badi movie. I beleive the interview was done by Saeed Naqvi. Anyway turns out Naseeruddin Shah was quite a fan of Dara Singh and had a lot of fun watching him. Incidentally he mentioned Dara Singh's The Thief of Baghdad as a landmark. It seems pretty odd to see Dara Singh being pitted against AB. But some of that surely is down to age(s). I mean there was a time Dara Singh was....well Dara Singh.

They were no different from what you see in WWE today. Also, the particular famous match where "Dara Singh" broke King Kong's leg - was not this Dara Singh.
