Just watching him and Donald on the sidlelines one can sense that they want to make up for the generation of great players and teams they have had and were a part of who could not reach the top of world cricket. He has definitely galvanized this team. They pulverized England.

Lost a test against SL at Durban(First victory for SL in SA). Though if he wins a series here, it'll be a great success but its an early call. Lets wait for this series to get over. As for India, anyone but fatso fletcher. Kirsten of course, will be great.
saneindian Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 When we had Gary, we were soundly thrashed by the nearly same SA side at Ahmedabad in 2008 and at Nagpur in 2010! Not to forget the humiliating defeats in SL in 2008 or the struggle we had in winning a series vs the Kiwis at home in 2010. Guess all that has been forgotten.

However imo, when things go bad, like our team, you do need a coach to straighten things out. Preferably someone who gets really stuck in. (not fletcher) I think the coach/captain should be made a selector to give them more control.

Not in favour of the coach being a selector personally. He can have a say but not a vote.

I like the idea of them being a selector because then you can hold them accountable with selection and tactics :giggle: Like you have people on icf saying Fletch isn't to blame. I would make the coach a more hands on role.

We have seen enough of Fletcher and it's time to move on.

I think the only the West Indies test match run chase would be one incident which could be different. I doubt there would be much difference with or without Fletcher. A role of the coach is very over rated especially on the International circuit. If anything, you should blame the captain than the coach - if you're seeking for a scapegoat.

Those days of 70s & 80s were one when a team could do with just a manager for booking tickets and rest of the team was all players. In this day and age, a coac/manager does play a role in channeling and extracting the best out of the team. Call them "performance managers" if you will but if you have a coach like Fletcher who is a retread and clearly over the hill you don't have much of a chance. Coaches may not be that important but having the right one does give you an edge over the others.

We have no knowledge to tell he's not helping them. Hence, an objective statement from my side would be for him to finish his term and then review..
