What's up with these firangs and India bashing  Its one thing if some govt body/secret police went about enforcing the moral policing, this was a random case of some youngsters seeking attention most if not all of whom have been arrested within 24 hrs. I didn't know that 100% of all men in the west were mild mannered well behaved citizens and their prisons all empty.
This. 1 billion people, there are gonna be some ***ked up people. Remember India's population is 3 times that of countries like USA. Atleast India doesn't have shootings every other week. Crime rates are probably higher in USA. Also what was the reason for thrashing these people? Was it some kind of revenge for something? Or just meaningless bashing? Video was too long to watch.

I could ask you the same question. For the record, no politician/policeman and/or any person in any position of authority in Australia will ever claim women bought rape upon themselves by the way they dress. Australia doesn't make the news for attempted gang rapes in the public every two days either.
Australian population is over 50 times less than India's... Im sure India's crime rate isn't 50 times greater.

Plausible. This looks less like moral policing and more like a rat out. I just watched the vid. This looks like some sorta inside job, matlab tiff gone wrong between college mates or sometin. And the one with goon power called his goons to make a scene. I don't understand the language, but I really don't think this is a case of moral policing. It's wrong no doubt and I hope those fuc*ups get an appropriate punishment. But let's not make it out to be something it's not. Again I'm being purely speculative.

False equivalence as it may be, the end result may very well be same. Here is a quick question. In the mid 70s Protima Bedi ran naked on Juhu beach with pictures in a magazine. You can find pictures online, if you have not heard of it Question is - Do you expect ANY Indian starlet today to do anything like that and not be hounded by culture police?? If not, Hindus have been hijacked by moral police as much as Muslims have been. We have regressed as a society in so many ways. Chahe chaku tarbooz ke uppar gire ya tarbooz chaku ke uppar and all that....
On the other side, we have made movies like Boys, Dirty Picture, Kye Super Cool hain hum, sex comedies which have been accepted as mainstream successes which would have not been even made in the 70s. Show me where a Hindu religious organisation (associated with a temple) condemning incidents like the Islam religious institutions do with fatwas, even Sania Mirza was not spared. I don't see how the equivalence is being established.

There may be few who have nothing special to do in there life , resort to coming on streets and act as if the burden of religion / code of conduct etc are on their shoulders.

So anyone who opposes streaking acts is regressive and those who support it are progressive ?
Are such people planning to give clothes to poor girls and women who can't afford it and have to stay without much cover at city roads and in villages? :dontknow:

Mangalore is my home town and did my Engg from there . you are spot on , this was pretty common even when i was doing colg ..every guy has some contact with a Don either in Dubai , Mumbai or worst case bajrang dal leader . The region is anything but conservative . There was a 3 day rave party just recently , some 6000 firangs ( mostly russians & israleis) had turned up . There is manipal close by , if you visit will most likely get a cultural shock . forget mangalore , you see gurls in skimpy clothes in Udupi which is supposed to be a temple town and no one gives a second look ..this incident has nothing to do with moral policing.

Manipal is due to the colleges they have around. A lot of expatriate kids study there. There will never be moral policing in Manipal for obvious reasons - conservatives are outnumbered.

Yes. Dunno any reason why anyone would oppose streaking acts unless kids are involved as audience. If two adults want to do something which is not illegal and are harming no one, yet someone wants to stop it, its is regressive

Hinduism and Islam have always been fundamentally different with regards to the role of a central figurehead. Hindus never have been led by any single leader, and even within the same region/jila/mohalla etc etc., you will be hard pressed for a common leader. So to expect Hindu religious organization to behave a la Islamic religious institution is easily incorrect. By the way, this whole growth of religious fundamentalism is directly related to fall of religion itself. It is not that Hindus of 2000s are lot more religious than their parents. I know I am not, and perhaps we can both agree that girls of our generation are lot less religious as well. Its not exactly that they are all doing vrata every other day :winky: This fall of religion in mainstream has also coincided with growing insecurity with regards to Hinduism. Maybe thats where the co-relation is? We, generally speaking, have become less religious and hence more insecure thus feeding directly to religious fundamentalism? Guilty feeling perhaps. :winky:

No Lurker, infact it is the opposite, every RELIGION in the world is fraternal and discriminates against women in one way or other, with some being worse than the others. In my opinion these stupid shenanigans are the outcome of the growing distance btw reality and religious conservativism.

Can you elaborate on that a bit Triam. My theory is that religious fundamentalist are more insecure, and less religious. An easy example is for example the expatriate crowd. Sure they are up in arms about how Hindus (say) are being taken for a ride in India, but the same set would perhaps also be the first to bail out of a theatre that is showing a Jai Santoshi Maa or a Bhakt-Prahlad.

I think you and me are saying the same thing, the lesser the religion is practised (I called it reality you said it as insecure) the more the religious conservatives jump up and down. The other part of this is they cannot accept the fact that women have these oppurtunities and are exercising them, centuries long domination of men is at peril because of the increase in opportunities available to women

Kudos- this has been solved in no time. Root cause- solution and commentary all lead to sensible conclusions: Mangalore attack: Girls should skip parties, Karnataka women's panel boss says Readers' opinions: Swapnil (Bangalore) 19 mins ago Every girl who goes to places such as a pub, disco etc is a characterless harlot. So whatever statement woman boss has made are correct. Please, none of you will ever marry such a girl. Old Man on Land (India ) Lurker??? 11 mins ago A wise counsel everyone will oppose.

TV reporter on what happened in Mangalore

I stood near the gate and watched. There was nothing happening inside that could conceivably provoke an attack. A girl was sitting outside on a chair and two boys in another corner of the bungalow were absorbed in their mobile games. They were not indulging in any activity which can be considered illegal.

 Mangalore police has implicated the journalist who broke the Mangalore home stay attack story for orchestrating the attack. http://tehelka.com/story_main54.asp?filename=Ws171012KARNATAKA.asp

In an absurd turn of events, the truth-teller is being punished for telling the truth. Naveen Sorinjee, the Kasturi TV reporter who broke the story of how Hindu Jagran Vedike (HJV) activists had beaten up and molested young boys and girls in a guest house in Mangalore, Karnataka, has shockingly been named in the chargesheet as orchestrator of the incident. On 28 July, around 50 HJV activists barged into the Morning Mist Home Stay located on the outskirts of Mangalore and manhandled a few boys and girls celebrating a friend’s birthday. The goons not only beat up the boys but also stripped and molested girls for not adhering to ‘Indian culture’. Caught on camera by a few reporters, this expose made national headlines, forcing the state BJP government to invoke the Goonda Act against the perpetrators. Stung by the expose, a vengeful district administration and police have now hit back by including Naveen in the chargesheet, alleging that he orchestrated the attack collaborating with the HJV activists. The magistrate court hearing the home stay attack case, has given a warrant for his arrest on 26 October. The Goonda Act has also not been invoked in the recent chargesheet, bringing back memories of the infamous Mangalore pub attack case of 2008, when Sri Ram Sene activists went on a rampage and were caught on camera. The state government had promised to come down heavily on the attackers, but three years later, the trial is yet to start. Interestingly, one of the accused in the July 2012 attack — Subhash Padil — was also part of the 2008 incident. Naveen alleges that the local administration and the cops have been doing their best to protect the perpetrators ever since the expose. According to the chargesheet, on 28 July, the police received the information of the attack around 9 pm. However, the camera recordings show that Ravish Nayak and Manikantha Neelswany of the Mangalore Rural Police were with the attackers when the attack was taking place. Images captured on camera even show Investigating Officer TR Jagannath arriving at the spot at 7:28 pm and taking a local corporator into custody. “This means the police had information beforehand, and not as claimed in the chargesheet,” says Naveen. “There is even video evidence of the assaulters being escorted to a safe place by the police.” Even though there were three media houses present in the incident, including channel TV 9, Sahaya TV and the newspaper Jaya Kirana, the police have registered cases only against Naveen (Accused No. 44) and Sharan of Sahaya TV. Ironically, Naveen did not even film the incident (as the cameraman had reported sick for that day) and had obtained the video from the other reporters, although his channel was the first to relay the incident under the headline “Taliban Culture”. So far, the police have arrested 27 persons in the case out of the 50 accused. Naveen says that he has been targeted because of his consistent reportage on communal forces and human rights violations in the district. “In the past two-and-a-half years, some of my reports have caused legal action against the police and exposed communal forces,” he says. Corroborating Naveen’s statement, TV 9 Reporter Rajesh Rao says, “Former Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar had called him (Naveen) in the middle of the night and said that he would see to it that he would be booked under stringent laws.” Rajesh doesn’t know why his name didn’t crop up in the chargesheet. Currently on a study tour abroad, Seemanth Kumar has been replaced by Manish Gardikar as the new Commissioner of the Mangalore Police. On being contacted, Gardikar said, since he has newly moved in, he would like to check the details of the case first before commenting on it. Civil society groups are incensed that Naveen is being punished for doing his job; also, that by naming him in the chargesheet, a prime witness to this case is being eliminated. “They have added an additional charge of indecent display of women on him, whereas, he was exposing the indecency of the HJV and the BJP government,” says Vidya Dinker, Coordinator of Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development. ”By targeting him, they are shooting the messenger.” Naveen’s bail application is now posed for 22 October.
