mhr123 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Brothers... i have been transferred back to India for a year or so and would be joining our Chennai office in next 3 mths... just wanna know , the life , how is the accommodation , is it a decent place to live , cost of living.. heard some news that Hindi speakers or not welcomed , it is true... Please give me some tips as i need to confirm my office by tmrw...:pray:
EnterTheVoid Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Here are my observations after staying in Mylapore: The place is hot, humid and sticky. Marina beach is overpopulated and dirty. On the flip side, it is close to the Chidambaram stadium. Santhome cathedral is worth checking out, it's near Rama Krishna math. You can find very good North Indian food if you know where to look. The food is actually more diverse than people give the place credit for. Knowing Telugu is a bonus. If not, English would suffice.

J P K Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 things u should know 1) u will have to face 10 months of summer 2) cost of living is ok compared to other cities like mumbai 3)u cannot survive with hindi english might work most of the time 4) might have electricity cut ,water problems depends on the area u choose
yoda Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Tons of Northies live in Chennai, most of them in business, mainly owning small shops like Auto parts, etc. There is no hate for people who aren't Tamil as far as I know. Yes locals will not understand Hindi, so I can see how that can be a problem for someone visiting, so you may need to learn up on a few basic tamil words to get by. You can always try English and hope the local auto rickshaw wallah or Sabji shop guy understands a few words. Weather has gotten worse of late, although that seems to be true with most cities in India. When I was growing up a few decades ago, we used to get nice evening sea breeze even in areas which were several miles from the coast, these days there is none of that. Traffic is no worse than any other major city. It does have decent public transportation, but the buses are typically crowded. It is a metro, so expect cost of living to be reasonably high, although housing is cheaper than cities like Delhi and Mumbai, it will be more expensive than others.

Renting house will be easy if you already have colleagues in Chennai.

triam Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 If you can survive the weather, you will do fine. English will serve you as good as tamil so no problems there. Much much more conservative when compred to other cities in India so no big night life etc.

I have been in N Africa for a while so heat won't be an issue for me... only thing is to get a flat in a decent area ..

For accomodation, I would suggest looking at Adyar, Beasant Nagar if you are gonna be working on the OMR IT corridor. Mind you, real estate is a tad expensive there but thats where most expats end up if they work in the IT industry. Btw...except the climate, am sure you'll enjoy Chennai and its hospitality

Well the worst of the heat is over here,but u might still be uncomfortable.There's a mandatory power cut of 1 hr in every area.Most areas are decent nowadays,rent will be quite high if u choose to live in the heart of the city,i would suggest that u choose a place near ur work place coz the traffic can get really heftic.
