Bumper did and read his post above. Even if Tendulkar manages to score a 100 or two it won't solve the bigger issue of having a settled lineup by the time we start touring away. If Tendulkar scores a 100 he will continue to play at home and then retire just before the away tours, leaving the team & his replacement (most probably Rahane) in the lurch holding the can. Maybe read a few of my earlier posts to at least get the point I am trying to make. I know it's a tough ask but at least give it a shot.

You assumed wrong. most of the away wins we had were on the back of Dravid & Laxman, and on a once in a blue moon effort by our bowlers (Sreesanth in SA or our pacers at Perth). Maybe you need to check the score-cards of our away wins rather than making incorrect assumptions.

Why in 2008? He had a good couple of years, was the highest averaging player when India rose to no1, was a part of the world cup winning team (not to forget him bailing us out against Pak in WC semis). Who wouldnt want all that to his name? Well he should retire now for sure

By 2008 he was past his best. His innings post 2008 were more of a batsman who put in a lot of effort (full marks to him by the way) to eke out every little inch of capability. The batsman prior to 2008 was one who was effortless and made you wonder if there was anybody else who has ever batted better. It is more of a fan's perspective I suppose. I am more of a natural style flair kind of guy(hence my penchant for Kapil Dev for example) than somebody who labours (hence my distaste for Imran as a batsman). I appreciate SRT's double century at Sydney but I hardly consider it one of his greatest innings, or the fact that he cut off cover drive in the mentioned game as a sign of a great batsman.

Basically Tendulkar should not be dropped as long as he is not the last in the list of averages of among playing XI. Good logic. You guys can never be reformed. Let him play till he turns 58.

But surely the player who sucks worse should be the first target for removal/replacement, unless you are advocating Dhoni, Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, UV, Bhaji, Ashin should all be replaced at the same time which wont happen. All the listed have been out of form for same time as SRT if not longer Anyway all this time debating same topic is wasted, Sachin will retire when HE wants, he is still enjoying the game and will reproduce his 20yrs form as he does every time.. :two_thumbs_up:

You are simply going back far enough for Tendulkar's number look good even though he has been in wretched form over the last 20 months. Reality is that Tendulkar has averaged 15 in his last 10 innings as a Test no. 4 batsman, and hasn't scored a test 100 in more than a year and a half over 15 Tests aor thereabouts while India was getting hammered. If we have to lose and have to endure an average of 15 from a no. 4 I would rather go with a youngster which has an upside that the player will eventually establish himself a la Pujara. And it's not as if we don't have batsmen waiting in the wings with likes of Rahane & Rohit still to get a Test despite averaging 60+ in FC cricket. There's no gain-saying in prolonging the struggle with an over the hill batsman and go through the same pain while blooding a newbie. We may as well do it now.

Based on pure numbers Ashwin is a better batsman than Tendulkar post world cup coz he averages more than him despite having to bat at no.8 or no.7.

I do agree with your general point, but tbe fact of the matter is that Sachin is certainly not over the hill thats where we disagree. But You are also playing with numbers, since when have any team dropped their best batsman after a dry spell in 10 test matches, especially someone proven x 100. If this was the case KP would have retired/dropped yrs ago. 10 test matches is NOT long enough period to judge if someone is finished and v others who have been equally bad in that tiime he cant be that far off. I would rather go with the strongest team on the day, as fans we criticise youngsters for poor performance and call for their heads ie Kohli (justifiable) and Ashwin (after 1 poor innings in his test match history), the grass is hardly ever green on the other side. Sachin was not doing charity by playing or India. He has been more than compensated in both monetary terms and love and affection he has garnered. And where do you draw the line. If your argument has to be bought into then we should persist with him till this lean Patch ends which could be never. India is not playing cricket to achieve Sachin's personal records. The door has to be closed on the guy and brutally at that. Nobody is bigger than the game.
