The 56-year-old Patil’s appointment to the hot seat, replacing Kris Srikkanth, came as a surprise as his name was not even being talked about as a possible candidate prior to the Board’s Annual General Meeting which finalised the panel here today. Roger Binny (South), Vikram Rathore (North), Saba Karim (East) and Rajinder Singh Hans (Central) comprise the rest of the new panel which had no place for former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath who was dropped after just one year’s term. Chandrakant Pandit, a wicketkeeper-batsman who played for India between 1986 and 1992, was named chairman of the junior selection committee. The AGM also decided to raise the selectors’ annual remuneration from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 60 lakh, while for the junior selectors, it was raised from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 40 lakh. The appointment of the panels put an end to the intense speculation in the media on who would succeed Srikkanth and the other selectors who completed their tenure of four years. While Binny’s name was doing the rounds as the next chairman, it was Patil, currently the National Cricket Academy Director, who was given the responsibility. From East Zone, there were a number of contenders such as Devang Gandhi, Deep Dasgupta, Debashish Mohanty and Arup Bhattacharya but it was former India wicketkeeper-batsman Saba Karim who surprisingly got the nod. Former paceman Abey Kuruvilla was being talked about as a strong contender from West Zone but he could not make it with Patil being preferred for the post. Patil, a dashing batsman in his prime, played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs for India, scoring 1588 and 1005 runs in the respective formats. Post-retirement, Patil became the India A coach before being at the helm of the senior team. With him in charge, the Indian team had made the finals of the 2003 50-over World Cup. He later served as coach of the Kenyan national team as well. Patil, in fact, ended up rubbing BCCI the wrong way when he served as one of the coaches in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League. He cut ties with the rebel league in 2009. Binny played for India from 1979 to 1987. In his eight-year career, the all-rounder picked 47 wickets in 27 Tests and 77 wickets in 72 ODIS. He was India’s highest wicket-taker during the 1983 World Cup. The 57-year-old played for two states — Goa and Karnataka — in the domestic circuit. BCCI’s previous selection panel comprised of Srikkanth, Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani (Central Zone), Surendra Bhave (West Zone) and Raja Venkat (East Zone). But his response in the second Test at Adelaide was something that established Patil’s reputation. He smashed 174 off 240 balls with 22 fours and 1 six off Dennis Lillee and Pascoe. But his inconsistencies were huge and ended up playing only 29 Tests and 45 ODIs for India, scoring 1588 and 1005 runs respectively. Patil worked wonders for Kenya, leading them to the semi-finals of 2003 World Cup. Roger Binny (57 years old) A useful swing bowler and a decent batsman – he was one of the few genuine pace bowling all-rounders to emerge from India. He played for India from 1979 to 1987. In his eight-year career, he took 47 wickets in 27 Tests and 77 wickets in 72 ODIS. He was India’s highest wicket-taker during the 1983 World Cup. He currently serves as an official in the Karnataka State Cricket Association. His son Stuart Binny had a brilliant Ranji season last year and we hope that a conflict of interest does not arise in the near future. Kris Srikkanth, the outgoing chairman, did enough of that in his tenure. Rajinder Singh Hans (59 years old) A Ranji veteran in every sense. He was the coach of Uttar Pradesh state from 2001-02 to 2006-07 and it was under him that UP won the Ranji Trophy in 2005-06 for the first time. He has been the coach of Jharkhand state for Ranji Trophy team for one year (2007–08). He was also on the All India Junior Selection Committee for two years, 2008–09 and 2009-10. He was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and played for Uttar Pradesh between 1976/77 and 1986/87. He has taken 374 first class wickets and taken 9 wickets in the Ranji Trophy final at Mohan Nagar against Karnataka in 1977-78 Saba Karim (44 years old) His cricket academy in Noida was inaugurated by Sehwag this year. Now he may be called upon to help settle things between the Delhi batsman and the skipper. He played 1 Test and 34 ODIs before his career was cut short by an injury to his right eye, which he received while keeping to Anil Kumble during the Asia Cup at Dhaka. He played first-class cricket for 19 years. He was an expert for Star News – now ABP — and had taken over from Sandeep Patil. And if you’ve seen him on the channel, you can expect some pretty fiery selection meetings. Vikram Rathour (43) Formerly known as Vikram Rathore, it seems as if the name change worked for him. Rathore, who retired from first-class cricket after scoring 11,473 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 49.66, had then said that he is moving to England to set up his family business of agriculture hand tools. But he’s back now and how. He played mostly for Punjab but also represented Himachal Pradesh in the later part of his career. He also played six Tests for India for an aggregate of 131 runs, with 44 being his highest score. He also played in seven One-Day Internationals, compiling 193 runs for an average of 27.57. He also took up wicket-keeping in a bid to try and make it to the Indian team. Currently, he was serving as the Assistant Team Coach for Kings XI Punjab. Former India spinner Ashish Kapoor is his brother-in-law.

Press Trust of India Wednesday, 26 September 2012 Mumbai: In what is expected to be a smooth and routine AGM on Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to revamp its senior selection committee by making at least four changes in the five-man panel following the completion of their term. Four members of the current panel, including chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth, are to depart after having completed their tenure of four years, during the course of which they saw India ascend the pinnacle of world cricket - in both Tests and ODIs - with the World Cup triumph last year being the icing on the cake. Srikkanth (South Zone) and fellow-selectors Narendra Hirwani (Central), Raja Venkat (East) and Surendra Bhave (West) have completed their term and are not eligible to continue as per the Board's norms, which has not been followed strictly in the past. In the 1980s, Chandu Borde was a selector for four years, including two as chairman of the panel and then returned to head the committee for yet another term of three years from 1999-2000 to 2001-02, as per the "BCCI Statistical Annual", a publication that has been discontinued over the last 3 years. Current secretary Sanjay Jagdale was also a selector for a total of seven years between 2000-01 and 2007-08 barring the 2004-05 period. The fifth selector in the incumbent panel, Mohinder Amarnath (North), has completed just one year of his tenure and can be re-appointed provided the Board members - especially from North - are in his favour. However, there have been reports that his re-appointment may not happen as there is a move to make either another former Delhi Test cricketer Chetan Chauhan or Punjab's Vikram Rathore as the zonal selector in his place. "Mohinder Amarnath had a tiff with Srikkanth as he wanted to replace (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni with (Virender) Sehwag (in the aftermath of India's row of eight Test defeats in England and Australia). As captain of Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni has the backing of the president (N Srinivasan)," an official of a BCCI affiliate said on condition of anonymity. When he was brought into the panel from the Indian Premier League governing council, Amarnath was reported to have been promised chairmanship of the committee once Srikkanth completed his term. If Amarnath is not retained, Roger Binny, who is the frontrunner to take Srikkanth's place from South Zone, would become the new chief selector, it is learnt. There is a tussle going on for the sole representative's spot from East zone with quite a few claimants like Deep Das Gupta, Dewang Gandhi, Arup Bhattacharjee (all from Bengal), Orissa's Debasish Mohanty and Jharkhand's Subroto Banerjee and the zonal representatives have to come to a consensus. The final decision on the appointment of selectors, who would get Rs. 40 lakh annually as salary, lies with the Board members after they get feedbacks from the zones, according to the BCCI sources. From West, Mumbai's Abey Kuruvilla, a former India pace bowler, appears to be the frontrunner after having chaired the junior selection committee that picked the World Cup Under-19 winning team. Others in the running are former pacer Karsan Ghavri, ex-stumper Nayan Mongia and former coach Anshuman Gaekwad, it was learnt. Former UP wicketkeeper-batsman Sunil Chaturvedi's name is the most prominent from among those making the rounds from Central Zone. The AGM will also appoint the junior and women's selection panels, plus more than a dozen various sub committees, including the IPL Governing Council that is now headed by Rajiv Shukla. IPL matters are bound to come up for discussion, including the court case involving the cash-strapped Deccan Chargers. Routine matters like passing of the annual report and balance sheet would also be taken up as the Board will determine how much money would be disbursed to the affiliates by the parent unit as subsidy from TV rights and IPL revenue.

The Indian Cricket Board has selected a new panel of five wise men which will reportedly be headed by Roger Binny. Binny, who is likely replace K Srikkanth, also represents the South Zone in the panel. Mohinder Amarnath, who had completed just one year of his tenure, has been dropped from the panel. According to reports that is because he had a tiff with a senior member of the Indian team.
