Most things in life are rarely completely black or white. Dhoni has been a very good LOI captain and effective test captain in India. No questions about that. It is equally true that he has been a colossal failure as captain in overseas tests. His understanding , encouraging and handling of pace bowlers has been one of his biggest problems. He has not been able to retain the services of any decent pacer that came up. Not necessarily his fault in every case. But, he has to share some blame. His defensive mentality while fielding has lead to his choice of defensive bowlers and using aggressive bowlers defensively -- and that has often lead to discouragement of genuine wicket taking pacers. There is so much negative going on for our pacers anyway. No pace idol, dead pitches, discouragement from all and sundry due to us being a batting crazy nation , bad diet, hot weather etc. A defensive , discouraging captain is the last thing wicket taking pacers need. Dhoni has many pluses but this aspect will be a big impediment to Dhoni's test performances abroad.

We are looking for death bowlers so dhoni probably is keeping shami for death and middle overs due to his pace .But its too much to ask for a young bowler ,I mean he is going to get hammered and loose confidence .I feel shami is best as a swing bowler and death bowling has to shared responsibility.

And your unnecessary personal comments are loathsome. Stick to the subject. It is not a question of bowling Shami with a 4 over old ball. It is more a matter changing a strategy that has working wonderfully in the last series. There must be some reason to change a working formula. Also, Shami has now been removed after over. So, having a spell with an almost new ball does not really hold. He did the same thing last match too.

What had dhobi not heard of 2 spells. Save some for death. Sorry not buying it. Either totally brainless or something more sinister, either way should be axed as skipper. We never have any 'good days' in the death overs anyway. If we think along those lines every time then we would never be able to decide on one particular thing. And who else would you pick if not Mohit? Ishan, Vinay or Unadkat - They are **** with everything - new ball or old.
