Dhoni: from instinctive to inflexible

Sachin didn't took up captaincy when there was a need to. What makes you think he will become a captain when he's going to be retiring soon? Sehwag is too egoistical and his form doesn't help. Gambhir can't even stop playing those crappy shots!! Why do some people believe him to be worthy of being a captain? No one else really stands out as being a candidate. So we will have to do with a defensive' date=' non-aggressive, egoistical captain like Dhoni for a while. [b']The guy keeps playing the same players over and over again hoping that they can perform once in a while so he can say look my decision was right.
What are the selectors for - eating idli/dosas? Don't make this 2 + 2 = 5. He is defensive and passive but to say he's in charge of the selection of 16 is quite comical.

also people saying make Kohli captain. That is a sure shot way for the seniors in the side to rebel. You like it or not the fact is there is a social hierarchy in the Indian team. Which is why if you make Kohli captain you may need to axe a lot of the seniors.
kohli is not even certain in test team.he has played only 10 matched and is averaging 41(only two more than dhoni).

The problem is how on earth Dhoni drop other seniors for poor form when he himself is suffering from bad form.Thats the bigger issue. There are only two options imo. Keep Dhoni as captain - Short term thinking He is still a very good captain becoz he is great captain of spinners and we mostly operate with spinners against Eng and Aus.Even as a batsman he is excellent in Indian conditions. But he will continue to pick failed seniors and so even then success in these is not guarenteed. But the moment we go to SA we can be sure of another thrashing next year Another option- Long term thinking Make Kohli as captain and drop the seniors(Gambhir Sehwag first and then Sachin and Dhoni later) and give him a free rein .We may struggle at home too initially but that will help build a long term future. We could build a team with a young team that may even finally succeed overseas. For people saying Kohli is inexperienced as Captain , neither did Ganguly or Dhoni (our best 2 captains ever) when they became captain.

i think they both had atleast 20 tests under their belt before they became captain. Kohli your talking about 5-6 test matches. Let him have another 1-2 years atleast to be at the same level in terms of tests as Dhoni and Ganguly.

He average is mostly dented by his first tour to wi though. And his place is far more certain anyone else in our team.So its a moot point.

I was only talking about captaincy experience tbh.Ideally i too would like Kohli to play 1-2 years before taking captaincy. But with Dhoni continuouing his downward spiral as captain along with his stubbornness in selecting players disastrously its best appointing an inexperienced Kohli than Gambhir or Sehwag or continuing with Dhoni.

I think we need to look at the challenges ahead. We are going to next face people away from home till December 2013 (south africa). Whatever you may say of Dhoni, his home record in tests has been very good as has his captaincy and his personal batting average. Maybe its a better solution to groom one of Kohli and Pujara to take over in a years time or so. So by say autumn 2013 Dhoni steps down from the test captaincy.

Awesome logic man.

Well you want Kohli thats what you will get. Greame Smith i do believe started off his captaincy on an away tour to England in 2003. The very fact you want a youngster like Kohli as captain means decisions have to be made. Look at the 2007 world cup. It worked out for us. In effect India will be mimicking the G Smith situation for SA. Look at somebody like Cook. Starting his captaincy away to India. Though he has experience its still a hard task considering they have not won for how many years in India? This way atleast you give Kohli a chance to cement his India spot. Otherwise you hand the captaincy to Kohli and then he fails to click then you are na ghar ka na ghat ka.

Dhoni himself is the baap of all non performers. Has been a non performing asset his entire T20 career. His keeping on the England and Australian tours was a joke and the less said about his batting on those tours the better. The icing on the cake was how his shoddy captaincy let go of any chance to save some face on those tours.
Plain ignorance. He was excellent with the bat for us during the 2007 wc we won.

comparing Kohli to Cook is again laughable. Cook has played 80 test matches and has been there and done that. He's been the vice-captain for about 4 years now, has toured almost all nations and also has been captained the ODI sides to 3 sub-continental nations. As for 2007 WC, MS was always under the would be leader mode, as per Greg. If you read the article that akash Chopra wrote, that also tells you the same. So, it was not as flash in the pan as it is made out to be. Moreover, I don't know why and what makes people go so gaga over Kohli and that too at such an early stage. He might be the best batsman currently, but test cricket is different stuff man. He came good in Oz but it's still early days for him. To make him the captain would not give him that space to row as a player. And lastly,India is not SA where the system is in order and you just have to lead a side with very good fast bowlers and full of professionalism. If MSD, as is being said here, can't drop a non-performing Viru, then can a Kohli can? I am asking this as this is what is made out here but I in my mind am sure that it's not always the captain's call when it comes to squad. Brining in smith for every shout of making Kohli the captain makes no sense. The 2 countries are totally different with totally different systems.
