Rajpoot got an impressive 5-fer on day 2..... Nayar is another jaddu.... looks like a domestic star but doesn't look good enough for international cricket (was a non-factor in a few odi's that he played)

Not given any opportunities. Was unlucky with an injury after making his debut and has been forgotten ever since. IMO he has been the MVP of the FC season so far, scoring crucial runs for Mumbai and taking very important wickets. Rated very highly by experts who follow domestic cricket.

Punjab captain Harbhajan Singh has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent to the umpire's decision during the team's Ranji Trophy quarter-final match against Jharkhand in Jamshedpur, on Monday. Match Referee Sunil A Chaturvedi said Harbhajan was fined for showing 2.13 level one misconduct (showing dissent to the umpire's decision) during the five-day knockout stage Ranji Trophy tie at the Keenan stadium. The out-of-favour India off-spinner indulged in an argument with umpire CK Nandan (Karnataka) after the latter turned down his appeal for a catch while bowling to Sunny Gupta in over 108.4.

Its time he accepted the reality that he is no longer part of the national squad and the only way he will comeback is through taking truckloads of wickets. Perhaps someone from the selection committee needs to take him aside and explain to him in clear terms what he needs to do for a comeback.

Pathan is a much better bowler than him. He's almost a Kohli level bowler these days. At best a Ganguly.

I used to rate him as a all rounder but as he gained as a batsman, his bowling dropped considerably. He wasn't even bowling much last season. He can be a option, but he'll have to make the team as a batsman who can bowl not a All rounder. His best bet would be performing well in IPL and making it into the Indian ODI team.

How on earth does Nayar average 50+, this guy is one of the most ugly batsmen in the game and his technique doesn't appear to be much better. Someone like Saurabh Tiwary is regularly mocked on here but in my opinion Nayar is even worse. Hopefully these false stats do not trick the selectors into thinking he is international material.

Paliwal, Chatterjee symbolise Services' resolve

"We are soldiers first, players later A soldier remains a soldier, till he is no more." These words from Wing Commander Deepak Bhaskar, the Services manager, sum up the attitude of the side that comprises cricketers from the Indian armed forces. When you hear these words, you begin to appreciate why Services captain Soumik Chatterjee, barely able to walk with a badly injured knee, dragged himself to the middle at No. 11 despite his team already leading Uttar Pradesh by 129 on a difficult pitch. You begin to appreciate why Chatterjee risked doing further damage to the severe clotting on his knee, and was bitterly disappointed when he lasted one ball. You begin to appreciate how much a rare Ranji quarter-final appearance means to Chatterjee's team, which still values and respects domestic first-class cricket in this age of IPL contracts. Chatterjee's struggle to reach the pitch moved the UP players enough for a few of them to walk up and pat him on the back. His struggle to reach the dressing room moved UP coach Venkatesh Prasad enough for him to walk up, take Chatterjee's bat in one hand and support the Services captain with the other. Like a tough senior officer, though, Bhaskar was nowhere to be seen near Chatterjee at that time. "Even if he could have scored 10 runs, it could have made a difference to the game," Bhaskar said later of Chatterjee's decision. "It is a big match, a Ranji quarter-final. If we fail here, it means that all the efforts we put in through the season, through the first eight matches, would be in vain." While Chatterjee's has to be one of the most heroic one-ball innings in the game, young Rajat Paliwal, in only his second season, did his best to see that Services' efforts in topping Group C weren't in vain with an aggressive unbeaten 112 off 133 deliveries. Paliwal, who hails from Sonepat in Haryana, joined the Air Force in early 2011 and debuted for Services in 2011-12, averaging 23.44 in five games. He had to later go through the rigorous military training all Services recruits have to, and has so far made 741 runs this season with four centuries at an average of 82.33. Paliwal's gloves were battered today by the UP fast bowlers, who kept up their short ball barrage throughout the morning session. A huge, bulging blister on the tip of his right forefinger did not deter Paliwal from hooking and pulling with total control on his way to his century, which could have yet taken the game away from UP. Paliwal, who will be promoted to a Sergeant soon, said that with the pitch providing help to the fast bowlers, there was little point in hanging around and defending, so he decided to attack. At no point was he reckless, though. A finely balanced hundred and a brave first-ball duck. Paliwal and Chatterjee took contrasting routes to show how much the Ranji knockouts matter to the men in uniform.

The underdog continued to bite chunks out of the big opponent's reputation on day two in Indore. In the morning, young Rajat Paliwal played probably the innings of his short career to give Services a lead of 129 on a difficult pitch. As Uttar Pradesh resisted in their second innings the way a top side should, fast bowler Suraj Yadav squeezed out four wickets through sheer relentlessness. After two days of excitement on the best surface produced for this season's Ranji quarter-finals, the best side of the league stage are still not out, but they are not in it by much either. Services had earned a narrow lead by stumps on day one with positive, unhindered batting. They raised the bar on the second morning. Knowing that a batsman was never in on the green, bouncy Holkar Stadium pitch, they attacked at the slightest opportunity. The efforts of Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh, whose partnership doubled the score from 97 for 5, brought 109 runs in just over two hours. The duo was beaten repeatedly outside off stump, especially Sarabjit and their gloves were battered by short balls - Paliwal had a large, bulging blister on his right forefinger - but the boundaries still came. A flail over slips by Sarabjit; a slash over gully and an upper-cut over the third-man boundary by Paliwal. Even as Services raced towards 200, Ankit Rajpoot, in his first over of the day, had Sarabjit edging one low to Mohammad Kaif at first slip on 40. Yadav edged a lifter to the wicketkeeper next ball, and with an injured captain, Soumik Chatterjee, doubtful to bat, there wasn't much batting left. Which is when Paliwal opened up further. He also began to farm the strike, taking singles towards the end of overs. When Piyush Chawla was introduced, Paliwal drilled his first ball to the deep extra-cover boundary, pulled the legspinner over midwicket for four and in the same over, lofted him for a flat six over extra cover. By now, Paliwal was unstoppable. He played the hook liberally as UP overdid the short stuff, and lofted Rajpoot to the straight boundary to reach his fourth hundred of the season. Chawla, for the umpteenth time in his career reduced to bowling flat and quick, was taken for successive fours even by No 10 Shadab Nazar. What this match meant to Services was evident when Chatterjee limped out after Nazar was bowled by a Rajpoot yorker. The Services captain was caught in front first ball to give Rajpoot his fifth, but there was no doubting Services' desperation in a rare knockout game for them. UP had to face about three overs before lunch, which was taken during the third when Mukul Dagar was given caught behind pushing forward to Yadav. Kaif, the stand-in UP captain, and Srivastava now battled, just like Sarabjit and Paliwal had. They were beaten repeatedly as well but hung on. As a rather harsh winter sun shone on the ground, Services' attack, comprising just three fast bowlers and a part-time medium-pacer, started flagging. But Yadav somehow summoned the energy to produce successive wicket-taking deliveries. Kaif, who had survived three lbw appeals in a Nishan Singh over, was caught in front on 33 by one that drew him forward and straightened past the bat. Yadav did it again next ball, a similar delivery zipping past Parvinder Singh's push to flatten the off stump. UP would have sunk further had Yadav not overstepped while having Srivastava caught behind on 32. Srivastava had been calmly leaving them outside off all this while, and along with the solid Arish Alam, steadied UP again. Yadav had more reserves left still. He dug one in at Srivastava late in the day, the opener was snapped up by the keeper again, and this time, it was a legal delivery. UP had played a spinning allrounder in Chawla and a spinner in Ali Murtaza on a grassy wicket, which meant it was the last batting pair of Alam and Eklavya Dwivedi at the crease now. The pair took UP into the lead, which at effectively 9 for 4 isn't much of a lead.
