The way he pulls "facts" out of his rear end and makes baseless accusations would make Goebbels proud. The newspapers National Herald and the urdu Quami Awaz were run from Herald house since Jawahar lal Nehru's time. Nehru was so emotionally attached to the news paper that he once remarked that he would "gladly sell Teen Murti Bhavan to keep Herald afloat". That's the reason subsequent generations of the Gandhi family kept it afloat using party funds. Till they closed it during the 2008-09 timeframe, the whole operation was one big non performing asset since the last few decades - it is not a non profit but a for-loss company. What kind of newspaper employs 450+ people for a circulation of a few thousand? Any modernization was vehemently opposed by the union and strikes were very frequent. When Congress came under non Gandhi leadership, salaries were not paid and there was a huge backlog of 8-9 months. But after Sonia Gandhi was elected leader, the paper saw a reversal in its fortunes, slowly the management paid every penny of the backlog all from party funds. As far as the property goes, the Herald House is in a prime location on Bahadur Shah Zafar marg next to the Dolls Museum but the whole building was a dump till about 5 years back. The management had loaned it to shops, offices and Canara bank in order to make some money out of the premises. When they decided to renovate the premises, there was a lawsuit filed by one of the tenants and that prevented any eviction of the tenants and utilization of the property. The whole operation was an endless sink of money without any significant returns. Finally the Gandhi family ran out of patience and decided to close down the office. Motilal Vohra was brought in to oversee the closure and one by one he settled all pending lawsuits and negotiated with the union for almost all the staff to take voluntary retirement. The final term that were negotiated were by no means unfair to the employees and the bill ran into crores. Both the building and the newspaper belong to the party and the Gandhi family, its not public money

If you hate someone, you can't have valid arguments is what I've learned. I don't think that's true though - the allegations must be seen with data & appropriate questions should be asked.

Politicians have long played this game knowing pretty well that even if the law takes its own course, they would get out by hook or crook and it takes a decade anyway to convict somebody. By the time, the scandal would've vanished from the public consciousness and these arseholes contest elections with impunity. Now, two can play the game and thats what Swamy/Kejriwal have done. If there is no evidence, the defamation case will drag on but the PR damage to the Gandhis and Kangress is irreversible. This time it is a sustained campaign that will not vanish from the electorate's minds when it comes to 2014.

The takeover by Young Indians must have taken place after that and after election time.

First party money is not public money, its belongs to a private entity but the use is governed by guidelines mentioned by the election commission. Secondly, the paper was founded in the late 30s and continued till 2009, For the majority of its 70 year history, it was not a profitable entity, initially funded mostly by personal funds from Nehru who was emotionally attached to the publication. In the last 30-40 years of its operation, the circulation dropped drastically and with 450+ employees, it became very difficult to sustain it commercially. Still the Congress and Gandhi family kept it afloat. The amount they spent on the paper far exceeds the 90 crores soft loan, the final settlement alone was estimated close to be 50-70 crores. Add payment of employee salaries for the last few decades to that sum to get a more accurate figure. Congress controlled Associated Journals and all its funds and properties anyway, another company in the fray (Young Indians) doesnt change anything. If Swamy wants to raise a valid issue, he should question why prime properties belonging to Herald were sold off in the 90s at throwaway prices. These properties in Bhopal, Lucknow , Panchkula and other locations were given by state governments as grants to the newspaper during its early years. They were sold off to Congress leaders and their benamis dirt cheap and would be worth thousands of times the price paid for them. I guess Swamy doesnt find that issue worth discussing because it doesnt involve Sonia or Rahul.
