As for Godse himself, he was a rabid Hindu nationalist. The RSS distanced themselves from him and to this day, deny that he was ever a member.

First decide what you are trying to prove? No one claimed, he was 'mahatma' in literal sense. It is just a honorary title - and perhaps because he was as close it gets to being one. As, it was given by people who actually lived with him. Any of single_reason_of_success sides are at equal fault a)saying was solely responsible for freedom, b) Freedom was achieved only due to after effects of WW2 c) Martyrs (Bhagat singh etal) deserve most credit...etc. etc. Outcomes of such scale can never be attributed to single person or event. Btw, as MTC said - There have been 1000s of martyrs, but you can count Gandhi and likes on fingers. And before you label me as Gandhi-loyalist... let me tell you, I hold both Gandhi and Hitler at the same level - on the scale of 'once in a generation (or even more)', kind of leaders.

No amount of violence could have led to the British leaving us, it would have become a matter of pride for them. It is clear you have absolutely no idea about Gandhi's philosphy and in the process you are also insulting the memory of Bhagat Singh. There is a reason Gandhi is among the most respected historic figures. Bhagat Singh was among the most courageous of people ever but there were many like him across the world. Gandhi was unique It takes much, much more courage to stand up against tyranny when you cannot hit back. It takes much more courage to keep on defying a force and not using violence. Hurling bombs and shooting people are the easiest thing to do. Ask the Taliban. Ask the NRA. Ask the LTTE. Ask any violent terrorist organisation. Also see how many times even justified causes were won just by hurling bombs. Gandhi is a name respected across the world and we Indians have narrow minded people liek you who abuse the name of someone who sacrificed so much for your independence. If this is not shameless and pathethic, I dont know what is Today's world needs Gandhi's philosphy more than anytime else. I have heard youngster's proclaim, Gandhi's philosphy doesnt work in today's world, its a tougher time. Gandhi's philosphy does not work in today's competetive world. Bull-sh!t. Today you have the luxury of freedom, no one to opress you, today's its much easier to follow his philosphy than any time. It was much tougher when you would be beaten up for stepping into a restaurant or even gathering outside. Does it take more courage to hurl a bomb or to walk openly and defy the British's salt law? Why does courage always have to be associated with violence and retaliation? IMO the most courageous thing would be to not retaliate in violence but keep on defying the other with your peaceful action. Heck, Gandhi commanded a mob of people who could have openly killed any number of policemen and that would have been the easiest thing to do. Yet he kept getting hit, kept getting shoved in jail and he kept coming back peacefully to protest. That there is courage of the highest order Class stuff. :hatsoff:

He walked 240 miles for getting rid of salt tax . He went to great length to getting freedom for *******s like the critics we find here. It doesn't matter what exactly got the freedom. Fact is he worked for it. Do a little research on what he did rather than what he didn't before poo-pooing intentions. ++
