1983-2011 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Karachi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was accorded a red carpet welcome in Pakistan's financial hub today as he arrived here on a week-long visit, hoping to augment contacts and cooperation between the two neighbours. Mr Kumar was received at the airport by Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, and senior members of the provincial cabinet and other high-profile personalities from the business and trade community. The Bihar chief minister, who is leading a high-level delegation will also visit the Mohenjodaro remains and the Sadho Belo Temple in interior Sindh during his week-long visit. Tomorrow morning, he will pay a visit to the mausoleum of Pakistan's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah before attending a seminar on 'Sharing of Experiences'. Mr Kumar told the media at the airport that he hoped his visit would further improve ties between India and Pakistan. "I believe that increased contact between the provinces of both countries will help increase cooperation and brotherhood between the people and governments," Mr Kumar said. "I have come here with a message of love for the Pakistani people as both countries want to have peace, stability and progress in the region," he said. To a question posed by a reporter, Mr Kumar said in a light-hearted manner that a person only invites someone to his home for whom he has love in his heart. "... And a person only goes to that place or house for whom he has love in his heart," he added. The Bihar chief minister had received praise for his good governance from Pakistan's cricketer-turned-politician, Imran Khan, who recently attended the World Economic Forum in Gurgaon. High-profile security arrangements were put in place for Mr Kumar and his delegation, with his motorcade guided by para-military rangers and elite police commandos. Mr Kumar will return to India via the Wagah border. In 2003, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad had also visited Pakistan and his trademark humour made him hugely popular here. Accompanied by the Chief Minister of Sindh province, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Nitish Kumar laid floral wreaths at the mazar and both the provincial heads stressed on the need for peace and brotherhood between the two countries. "I believe that Pakistan and India need to work together and exist peacefully with each other. This will not only guarantee prosperity and development for both countries but also for the entire region," Nitish Kumar told reporters outside the mazar. Nitish Kumar, who arrived in Karachi yesterday on a week-long visit to Pakistan, said during his goodwill visit he would share his experiences on development projects in Bihar. The Sindh CM said that both countries shared a lot in common and it was natural for them to have good relations. "We share a lot in common in culture and traditions and we need to build on this. I invited Mr Kumar to visit our province because I believe that the more we have such visits between provincial heads it will increase cooperation between the two nations," he said. Nitish Kumar will also be visiting Lahore and Islamabad on his tour. A Sindh government spokesman said that steps had been taken to provide foolproof security for the visiting Indian delegation. So his main purpose i can see to his visit is to project his secularism and counter Lalu's often claim of how popular his visit to pakistan is.

And you think India Muslims give a flying feck about whether their neta visited Pakistan when they are voting?

Not sure when Laloo claimed such, or if his Pakistan visit ever helped his win his seat from Hajipur, let alone entire Bihar. Cynicism aside, in a way it is nice to see Nitish Kumar go to Pakistan. A lot of Bihari migrants did move to Pakistan around partition. Specially in Sindh area. Personally I have met a few of these and it is always a nice feeling to do so. In Rahul Bhattacharya's book Pundits from Pakistan, he mentions of an incident when Indian team lands in Pakistan and is welcome by a middle aged lady and her kids who have Patna blood with a banner in chaste Hindi - Main apne Hindustani Mamaon ka swagat karti hoon. Not sure what Nitish, or Pakistan, gained from this trip. But nice to see not every visit is measured by foreign direct investment angle.

Pakistan is something which all Hindu nationalists are allergic.Advani visited Pakistan and praised Jinnah and we all saw what happened to himt when almost everybody deserted him.Also if there are Bihari muslims in Pakistan then some of there relatives must be in India.These people may feel happy that their leader is interested in good relations with Pakistan
