Utalk Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Indian team was ranked #1 eighteen months ago and there was this talk of domination. Fast forward to today and team is ranked 5th with serious danger of losing a series at home after getting humiliated in Eng and AUS. There is one thing I could not help but notice that majority of the fans have become very realistic and know they are in trouble and things need to change. Every team goes through this period where golden generation is on the way out and results suffer. Next step is to introduce young blood but they won't change results overnight. This is the phase where you need to lower expectations and hope that transition is smooth. But in my 25 years as a follower of the game I have seen fans fail to come to terms with reality and despair at the situation. We were a decent side in 90s and did relatively well overseas barring AUS. Then we lost half of the team after a disastrous 03 world cup. Team started to struggle and it was hard for fans to accept. Every new player was hailed the next Sachin, Anwar and Waqar. We did not win a single test match for nearly three years. It was only after the fixing saga expectations came down and guess what results improved. Our test team is very settled and steadily improving. Kudos to Indian fans for recognising the whole situation and lowering their expectations. On odd occasion you see a KT but mostly ICF has handled this with dignity and maturity. This is how it should be.
gimac Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Few facts to be blamed in my opinion. Too much cricket, IPL, Too much money grabbing & last but not the least, Mr Duncan Fletcher himself. My heart sank when I heard he was going to be the couch. I was not wrong.

Fletcher was good for Eng because that was a team in a mess. He had time and support to change things. He was a perfect fit for them but Ind was a different challenge. Here was a team already doing well under a young coach and needed a dynamic man with new ideas to evolve things.

Your world beating Eng team could not win a test series against a certain team at your home ground for 24 years over 5 test series in 80s and 90s. Can you name that team? Hint it's not AUS.

Some balls you got to talk about them after getting hammered 'cheaply' earlier this year. Matter of fact it doesn't take us every 28 years to win a series in England.

Matter of fact it doesn't take us every 28 years to win a series in England. That's nothing it took them 24 years and 3 home series losses( one drawn) to beat us at their HOME.

Which matters more to sub-continent teams anyway. Its' been 16 years since they've last won a series in England. It's not going to happen anytime soon. We won in their backyard 12 years ago. Took India over 30 years to win their first series in England.

There is no transition taking place as yet and I fear vested interests by certain parties will not allow that to happen smoothly either. Dark days ahead indeed. IPL makes no sense if you cannot last 80 overs.

Bumper Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Utalk, i think the situation is a bit more dire for us than say Pakistan of 2003. Else where, the senior lot leave the scene (or they are pushed out) and its a matter of trying out different youngsters until you hit the right combination. Even with a terrible board like the PCB, you could build a team, as you had talented cricketers and to a large degree performance was the main criteria for picking them. I am not implying you have a world beating team, but at least Pakistani team seems to be on its way up. But in India, money that once used be a good by product of this sport, has taken over it completely. As a result, our cricketers have become shameless. These guys are not hurt to lose anymore. They are quick to defend themselves and give speeches justifying their spot, clinging on to it,like its their personal property. Our board is in bed with these stars. Our team sponsors drive selection policies, captaincy etc. In other words, this is a big mafia system at work. This coupled with the fact that not too many ready replacements are available means, we are going to struggle for years to come. IPL is the last nail in the coffin of Indian cricket. It has injected far too much money into the sport and has taken away the drive, temperament and technique needed of a good test player. I dont see any future for India's test cricket. Five years from now, this message board will only witness discussions on T20 cricket.
Old guy Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 problem is transition has not even started players are not performing and now rahane has sat on bench for how long ? its one thing if young players take time to settle i dont care abt losing but way we have lost witout any accountability with same team playimg here which played in australia...only changes are the replacements of two retired greats otherwise losers have just been shuffled in and out of team we could have planned this and these loses could have been reduced but now i fear most young players will debut in south africa and take time to settle in so this is gonna continue for 2 years more i think
