This is why Rohit Sharma isnt going anywhere at the moment. Back in 2007-09 almost every cricketing expert in the world rated this guy as the future of Indian cricket. The argument against him was that he didnt have a great FC record. In 3 years he's brought his FC record up to 60, and now people are saying he doesn't have a good LOI record. It's like what Ian Chappell said, "When you have a class player and you make him play a low standard of cricket for too long, he develops sloppy habits." This is just terrible selection. Suresh Raina has played 17 tests and Yuvraj Singh has played 40 tests. Neither one of them has shown they have the technique or temperament for the longer form of the game and both have inferior first class records to Rohit Sharma but the selectors keep giving them extended runs. Yet Rohit Sharma, despite people calling him 'Nohit' and saying he's been given chances, has yet to play a single Test match. Its quite sad ... He probably won't do well in the T20 tonight and ignorant fans will use this to validate not selecting him in Tests, calling him 'Nohit'. The fact that Ravindra Jadeja got a run before Rohit Sharma is absolute lunacy but thats what you expect from the BCCI now.

He played 85 ODIs and his average is 30. If he is such a good player, why did he fail to convert most of those chances into good scores ? Did any Indian batsman get even half as many chances as he did despite repeated failures ? Test match cricket is way tougher than ODIs which are usually played on super flat tracks and where conditions are stacked against the bowlers. Someone who has struggled in such ideal conditions for batting cant stake a claim for the test side.

The 1989-1994 stats is a little misleading because that Sachin's average in that period was still significantly better than the rest of his teammates and was the top ODI player for the team then. On the other hand, Rohit's average is lesser than most of his teammates and he is the weakest ODI player in the Indian team.

That is my whole point. Please don't play him in the ODIs. Let him play tests first! With confidence it will be just a matter of time he'll turn it around in LOIs! It's just ridiculous when I see hacks like Yuvraj, Raina playing tests and Rahane, Rohit playing T20s! BCCI should recognise which format the player is more suited to!

This is the kind of flawed logic that sees people like Raina and Yuvraj consistently selected over consistent domestic run-machines like Tiwary and Badrinath. Only in India do we keep a player with a first class average of near 60 out of the Test side, because of his ODI record. Domestic cricket and performance on A tours should be the main benchmarks for selection into the Test squad. Even if they fail completely, they should at least be rewarded for putting in the hard yards in domestic cricket.
