One the quickest bowlers from India in the 80s, Raju Kulkarni, did not get sufficient chance. Dibly-dobly pacers played for India. In the 90s Ashish Winston Zaidi was a very lively bowler and Vivek Rajdan was fast-medium. Zaidi never played for India and Rajdan played just one test. Mhamray, Subroto Banerjee, Dodda Ganesh etc. , very medium pacers got chances. Sandeep Sharma ( not the current one) was a very quick bowler from the Punjab but never played for India. Later on, Rakesh Patel, from Baroda, who swung the ball at pace, never got a chance. Currently, the tall, bouncy, Pankaj Singh and Manpreet Gony, are ignored but Vijay Kumar, Mithun etc are getting lots of chances. I am sure there were quite a few other bowlers who were quicker than the military medium guys who played and played.
express bowling Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 The effort was there with the Gatorade pace competition. In the first year they selected 3, the next year they selected ten. They got a stint at MRF, but none of these people who won these competitions were 140+ or anything. I still think that if you have a few guys bowling 140+ regularly in Ranji, they'll come into spotlight right away. Like VRV Singh did. In the last couple of years, the importance of quick bowlers is being recognised by the selectors at different levels, maybe because of increased use of speed guns at different facilities and grounds. This should bring about the selection of more and more quicks. Unless quicks are actively searched and favoured at pre state level, they won't come though to play at state level.

His FC average is about 33 as a bowler, so he wasn't really that exceptional. Paras Mhambrey, Subroto Banerjee etc got the same number of chances or less - in fact, Subroto Banerjee picked up 3 wickets in his first innings and was never given the ball again in that spell. I think you are talking about Sanjeev Sharma from Rajasthan - and not Sandeep Sharma from Punjab ... Even he has played 23 ODIs and 2 Tests, and was never great shakes. It's not that these pacers were not given chances, they were and they did not seem special enough to hang on to. All these dibbly-dobbly bowlers you mention actually got lesser number of chances than the phhast ones you mentioned. Regarding Pankaj and Gony, Pankaj will surely be in the India-A team soon, and Gony is not really a phaast bowler ... he's medium pace only. What we need to understand is that if the phaast bowlers just steam in and bowl phhast without affecting the batsman anyway, spray everywhere and get hammered, they'll not be of much value to the team anyway. No one will be retained or given a long, long rope without any performances at the Test level (except, Ishant of course, who has tailunt).

Another bowler who averages 33.50 in FCs and has around 1.5 wickets per match. No wonder. And just one 5-wicket haul in his entire career of 79 matches. Must be an FC record. :omg:
