triam Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Anyone gave tablets to their parents, what works good in India with respect to limited maintenance and internet speeds in India? genral use for email and video chatting etc, nothing special. Prefer not to buy apple, thanks for any inputs.

The Outsider Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Haven't tried too many, but Apple for a tablet is way overpriced and this is coming from a self confessed fanboy. Recently purchased the Google Nexus and it's really good - happy with everything so far and very affordable. Also liked Kindle Fire - it's graphics kind of suck, but if it's for your parents who I assume will not be playing Fruit Ninja on it, it's a good buy. Reading clarity is the best on it among the tablets tried out.

How difficult was to set the whole Internet thingy?

My dad was dismissive when I told him I bought Galaxy SII for 25,000 bucks. But when I showed him what all he can do on it, he is hooked and wants to purchase one for himself. He used to be tech-phobic but now he is heavily dependent on internet and this gives him even more flexibility. :icflove:

You can get it for around 350 USD and it's not that hard to set up wireless access although you will need a internet connection at home in India

I got it before thanksgiving, for $300 (it was $50 discount I think). Internet is easy if you have a wifi at home (which my parents do have, but rarely use). It just seamlessly connects to wifi.
Desi Cartman Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 I got Ipad 2 for 399 in September and yes its 100 bucks more than other options but it was worth it considering it works with apple TV, has great apps and above all the battery on that thing never drains. We used it for 5-6 hours of watching video recently and at the end of it, there was still 70+% battery remaining. I havent used any other tablet so cant really compare but iPad is good anyway

Their mode of intenet connection is Tata Indicom cartridge. You know the kind that you plug into the USP port. Do these tablets have USP ports?

You know the kind that you plug into the USP port. Do these tablets have USP ports? you mean usb right? You will have to use Wifi to connect all tablets. The thing with this galaxy tab is that you can only expand up to 32gb. I've tried playing with the OS in the store and to be honest I didn't like it. I liked nexus 7 much better. Nexus 7 has USB port so all you have to do is buy that USB OTG (on the go) adapter from amazon for a buck so you can use the usb devices [ame=http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Micro-USB-OTG-Adapter/dp/B005QX7KYU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356660468&sr=8-1&keywords=USB+OTG]Amazon.com: eForCity Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter: Cell Phones & Accessories[/ame] I would also rather buy nexus because it has a newer OS and also because the support for it is much better. I have heard that the support for samsung is almost nonexistant. And it still uses the Ice Cream Sandwich. P.S. Try to buy it from Walmart or Office depot. It's the same price but I've seen them give $50 gift card along with it sometimes.
Shane Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Got the iPad 4 and the Nexus 7, both are great wrt their form factors, but the iPad is way more classier, now just waiting for the iOS 6 to be jb'ed :D Btw I would recommend the Nexus 7 I think its more VFM.
