Sourav Ganguly as Team India's coach - the pros and cons

Dhoni is a mere puppet where is Ganguly is more of a personality -good or bad whichever way you look at it.

This. Dhoni was never a leader and he could never inspire his team when chips are down. He is an avg Test player(at times mediocre) and he captained from the times when we had Ganguly-Kumble-Sachin-Dravid-Sehwag-Laxman .. what's his stature as a player in front of these players. I can't imagine what would they be thinking of him in their mind when he speaks among them as a captain.. something like how this fuddu is captaining us. :phehehe:

A captain is not always the best or greatest player of the team. If that was the case, SRT would have been our best captain. Neither Ganguly was a great test player, was just a decent test batsman, while Dhoni is one of the best wk/batsman we ever had whether in tests or ODIs.

Dhoni was none of these, he was just there to fill the seat and probably this is the way he was seen as by most of the players. Hence we see a captain in him who lacks leadership skills.

Dhoni is very much a self-indulged person, that's it. I dont see him building a new team because he does every other thing other than thinking about cricket when he is not playing. Even, his less practice, more rest theory even when team is struggling is his own.

Let's take the Bell incident for example...Even though Dhoni wanted to appeal he obeyed the seniors decision to recall him...Now that's an admirable personal quality for sure but not a great display of leadership...debatable but don't think Ganguly would have listened to anyone had he decided to go with it.

The series was not yet lost, we were trailing 0-1 and had come close to beating the Aussies in Chennai in the 2nd test, but Ganguly abandoned the ship because he wasn't given a track he wanted and then went onto miss the 4th test as well. I wonder if there is an ICF archive of threads from that era. Post that Pak series, we lost a home series to the Aussies, drew against a mediocre Pak side, won vs SA, BD and Zim. in ODIs other than beating BD and Zim, we did not do anything else, lost in Asia Cup, tri series in SL, lost a ODI series to Eng, knocked out in CT, lost to pak 2-4 after leading 2-0 in the series after first 2 matches. Also but for Dalmiya moving out as BCCI chief, Ganguly would have carried on leading the national side much the same way as Dhoni is right now with Srini's backing despite the team in disarray.

I remember wanting ganguly out of the team as much as dhoni now.He did not perform with the bat and was a walking wicket.I followed odis more then.But now i look at his test record for year 2004,2003 he had good years averaging above 42 and had a ordinary year in 2005 and was dropped as test captain .We had dravid as captain waiting in wings.So It was not much of a decison.Ganguly did try to get chappel to back him but it did not work out . That test ,all those stories were floating around and all he was said to be advertsing the next day. But Ganguly was man who fought for what he believed in and allthough his captaincy detoriated with his form in last years but what he did in his early years as captain were best i had seen.The attitude and determination was great for indian cricket along with the backing he gave players who turned out to some fine players.

I really pray to god that Dada becomes our coach. Only then will we rise. Dhoni needs to let go of captaincy and give it to a younger player. I would pick Raina. (Raina can handle way more pressure than Kohli can ever imagine)
