How did the greatest ODI player ever get such a low key exit?

For the last 2 years I was writing down various thoughts of what i would say should SRT retire now or next year and so on. Just recently when he finally announced his one day retirement I junked it all in recycle bin in sheer disgust. Here is a legend hell bent on messing the team just for a pathetic personal record of playing 200 tests. Instead of retiring from ODIs, he chose to hang in choosing his matches and upsetting the team competition's settled top order. Now he is screwing the grooming of a young deserving players by hanging on in tests when its obvious his time is up and he has nothing left to give to the team. Its not a question of his coming back to form anymore. At 39 he doesn't have more than a year to scrap through even if he comes back to form. he was fortunate he made a test team at the age of 17 when many established players with many seasons of hard work were being ignored. Now instead of making way for a younger player who may have worked as hard, he is insulting his past record, the game and his fans equally instead of retiring with dignity. After Azharuddin's fall, SRT's attitude hurts me the most now. Having grown up on these two master-bats, I find it frustrating that neither has any iota of self-honesty so necessary for a sportsman. For a guy who had accused Azharuddin of being selfish as a team man at the end of his disastrous second tenure as captain, his willingness to overlook his own selfishness [first exposed when he chose to play IPL through his injuries and skipped national duty in WI in tests for resting] is even more appalling! When he does retire from international cricket altogether, it will be just another day for me not worth commenting or complimenting anymore.
Whatever anyone's views on SRT dragging out his career or not- comparing SRT to Azhar's actions in any shape or form is just nonsensical

Equally comical is suggesting that his selection at the age of 17 was wrong.

No one is comparing match fixing angle here. Azhar was absolute pits. But honesty of intentions can be questioned. Playing selfishly for a record than give someone his due place in the side merely on past glory is as selfish as it gets. We need to learn from Aus and Eng to be less emotional and more rational.

There was no suggestion that it was wrong. Where have I even suggested that? Here is my post on that again for you. Read again with reading glasses if need be:
he was fortunate he made a test team at the age of 17 when many established players with many seasons of hard work were being ignored. Now instead of making way for a younger player who may have worked as hard, he is insulting his past record, the game and his fans equally instead of retiring with dignity.
I have merely stated that he was fortunate that selectors showed faith in him as a youngster when more established players were waiting and its his time to allow another to take his place in the side. NOWHERE HAVE I SAID IT WAS WRONG! Try to understand what is being implied before shooting off silly giggles. If you can't understand the context don't post juvenile comments. Wasim Akram was chosen by Imran young and without much domestic cricket behind him merely after seeing him bowl. Parthiv Patel was tested young too in that grueling England tour just a shade older than SRT was when he was chosen. I have no issues with that. The crux was that there are more younger domestic players with hard work waiting. Players like Tewary or Rahane who are not getting a chance. He should appreciate the importance of giving a youngster a place at the correct time and vacate the side he is blocking for such a youngster or a hard worker on domestic cricket now that his time is up. Pujara got a chance because Dravid saw wisdom in retirement. He could also have played for records and he was the best in form man from seniors last whole year. THAT was the crux of my point. It is most criminal when a performing youngster at is peak is denied a chance to play and develop merely to accommodate older players past their shelf life picked on past reputations. It is gross injustice. Would Aus have allowed Ricky Ponting or Steve Waugh or anyone to pick and choose which one day series they want to play and allow an unsettled top order no matter who the batsman in question was? SA? England? Hell even Pak? Only a stupid BCCI could have allowed this farce on the altar of marketing and hero worship. Dhobi had every reason to feel pissed as a captain every time the God of cricket woke up and decided he wanted to play a one day series. There is so much patience respect can buy you. Dravid was smart he retired immediately when he was chosen for England ODIs out of the blue! That is called selflessness and honest commitment.

Exactly. He called this humiliation upon himself. Greats typically have enough pride programmed in their genes, to avoid living through such humiliations, only the very selfish subject themselves to such a demeaning exit. Even now, I dont think he exited himself, he was pushed out. And in spite of all his numbers and talent, I dont think SRT is the greatest ODI player ever, though he would make it to the top 5 list easily. He has left such a bad taste in people's mouth that even those who'd have normally sung hosannas at his exit, can't be ar$ed anymore with this man. I think its gonna get worse from here for him if he does not retire from tests in the near term. A great no doubt, but one of the most selfish ever to play for the country.

And with this one paragraph the hypocrisy of this poster stands exposed. He calls Sachin greedy and money hungry but fails to realise that when someone worries about his own cult status and legand status over his team he is equally being greedy, selfish and much more. And I am sure you can also see the contradiction in your own statement! How is being greedy for cult status over team goals any different or better than being greedy for money? If a player still has a year to contribute to his team but is more worried about the magnitude of the occasion, about his cult status and retires when his team needs him (as is clearly evident to the most blind observers seeing our openers perform in ODIs) then that player is the greediest, most selfish player ever You are fooling no one, you had no respect for Sachin in the first place, and I can see you rubbing your hand in glee with each post. Your statement about losing respect for Sachin in each post is very like how a racist starts his posts with, I am not a racist but.......................... But not to worry, your post will make a 100 times more people lose respect for you than anyone losing respect for Sachin.
:omg: I remember when the great man finally got his 100th 100, he played selfishly and slowly at the end of his innings when the need was fast runs and strike rotation. India lost to Bangladesh and also the Asia Cup in the process? No? It may be true that there are no better players to replace him. Maybe. Possibly. Maybe Pujara is a bad choice in your book for Dravid using that strange logic. Maybe we deserve the lesser players [i am sorry I didn't get your IPL crack since I am a great IPL hater who has never seen a single match too date]. Perhaps. But then is playing over the hill and slower seniors the answer. Can he be made to play 5 years more if you don't find good player? Does that mean chances should not be given to youngsters and they be judged before even trying them? How do you even know how good one will be or bad without giving him a chance? Would Dravid and Ganguly be in the side if that judgement was used against them to play the likes of more established seniors like Siddhu, Manjrekar, Kambli etc but who were inconsistent? Did anyone think Sehwag would be the best opener we ever head when he was chosen as a middle order bat at start? Or that Laxman would be the best test bat after Dravid when he was failing as makeshift opener whose career looked over till Ganguly placed his faith in him? Or that Yuvraj and Raina could be so crappy in tests after a brilliant start in one dayers given their talents? How can you decide without even trying? By your argument we have made a grave mistake choosing Pujara instead of begging Dravid to play some more. Should I say more?

If he had announced towards end of a series or tourney, then the final game would be have been a send off. If he chooses to quit after a series is over, what send off can be given? Anyways, Sachin is done with ODIs and hopefully from tests too soon. It is laughable for people to suggest that he should still keep playing to provide mentorship to guys like Kohli as if we can have slots in the team just for motivation and mentorship. We were sucking with him in the team and we are sucking without him cause we suck in many spots including the one he was occupying. Hopefully we find players to take up those spots over time, and I would rather we look for those replacements than keep choking with the same guys over and over again. This now applies to guys like Sehwag and Gambhir as well.

Agreed. Its tough to talk of 'mentorship' when a rookie bowler like Ashwin is scoring more runs than your legendary batsman series after series. Make him the batting coach in which case!

I agree srt is the greatest accumulator.

Haven't read this thread fully but possibly because the selectors told him he would be dropped if he didn't retire (possibly unlikely as Gambhir, Sehwag and Rohit have been given further chances).

LOL @ those who think he retired gracefully from ODIs without any external pressure. Dec 21: SachinTendulkar to play ODIs against Pakistan and England: Report http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-12-21/top-stories/35952280_1_sachin-tendulkar-selectors-odis On Dec 23 he announces his retirement. Later on the same day, the Indian squad was announced. You guys are defending the indefensible and making Sachin look worse. Just admit that he was selfish and would not go and had to be pushed out. That's the truth.

If he was selfish, he would have worried about his own personal legacy over his blundering team and retired on a high like Lara than trying to still play for his team even when he know he wouldnt ahcieve his peak BTW, I always thought you were a good poster, but how can a cricket fan not respect someone like Sachin and call him names even after he has retired?
:hysterical::hysterical: Dude, i thought you were among the saner posters, but seriously, posts like these give me guffaws. So him retiring in 2003 would have been selfish, but him clutching onto his spot when he's got no numbers (including his age) to back himself up 10 years later would not ? That personal legacy that you are talking about has nothing to do with the no. 100s, 50s, average and all the ithyadis your master cares so dearly about ? Tendu has been terrific batsman over the years, but has always been a numbers man. He is still playing for his numbers, if India wins in the process he'll take it.

India has the best batting depth in the world, but they are stuck in domestic cricket getting nowhere. Faith has been put in the wrong players for years, from an outsiders point of view. Raina, Yuvraj, Mukund, Nohit, these guys are average non-ODI/IPL players. Rahane is pure go.d Pujara too (good he finally got a go), i like even Mukund, and even Badrinath (though his time has passed now i guess). Chand looks great. Invest in youth, always, much like India did in 1989. I can recall Darren Lehmann (yes i know he isnt Sachin) saying in 2004 that he would give up his test spot for Michael Clarke, as there was no future in him playing tests whilst standing in the way of a possible great young player. Team must move forward, always. Most 34+ year old players retire too late, its just how it is, ends up being sad for most to go out with a wimper. But hey, they are just sportsman, they are not the most intelligent people in the world.

But hey, they are just sportsman, they are not the most intelligent people in the world.[/quote'] I don't know man, the grass always looks greener on the other side. I personally think Indian cricket is screwed forever. BCCI has killed the golden goose with excessive dose of this IPL poison. IPL has not only killed the technique and temperament of potential test players, but also their hunger. Rohit Sharma of 2008 was the next Tendulkar in the making. After 4 years of million dollar pay cheques and royal life style, the lad hardly looks motivated to play for the country. Murali Vijay looked like a great test prospect few years back. Few years of IPL, he can't buy a run at the international level anymore. Our supposedly promising spinners like Ashwin have no patience or aptitude for the longer version of the sport. Rahane, Pujara, Mukund and the likes belong to the last generation of players with some aptitude for test cricket, as they grew up on proper first class cricket. The next gen players will grow up on a heavy diet of T20 sh*t and their career ambitions will start and end with IPL. To make matters worse, the bufoons manning our cricket board & selection committee do their bit. They dont give a damn about the sport that made them so rich. Its all about milking every last penny the game has to offer and doing enough lip-service to keep the fans and the media interested. We deserve where we are now.
