All doors and windows had his pictures pasted. I skipped family marriages for his innings, I woke up at 3AM just to see him in New Zealand, and slept too late for WI matches. I went to neighbors house to see him bat whenever my father was drunk and didn't allowed me to watch cricket and told me to sleep. I sacrificed so much for him, I pleaded to my tuition madam to allow me to watch WC99 matches instead of studying at her home. You know how he rewarded me? By crying on death of that charlatan baba, that moment I felt worst in my life. I dedicated my childhood to this guy and he robbed all my pride I had for India having a son like him. I was shattered, I was in disbelief. God gave him everything, and he cried on some pakhandis funeral. I had strong feeling that moment that his downfall has started and I was proven right, he was not same batsmen anymore, he got cursed from his biggest fan ever! I still have soft spot for him, but certainly that love ain't the same, PS: I cried on his ODI retirement.

But after his 100th 100 against Bangladesh, the selfish way he played and lost India the match and after he joined Rajya Sabha I've lost all respect for him. When he said its selfish to retire, I knew this guy isn't the one knew. He has lost respect from a lot of his fans, if he doesn't retire soon, he will be left with no fans at all. He will have a disgraceful exit from cricket. I hope I'm proven wrong. I consider him one of the greatest batsmen, but an average cricketer. He just knew the art of batting. Nothing more. No sense of cricket at all, never played for the team. Dravid and Ganguly were much better cricketers than him. They are my most favorite Indian players.

For the last 2 years I was writing down various thoughts of what i would say should SRT retire now or next year and so on. Just recently when he finally announced his one day retirement I junked it all in recycle bin in sheer disgust. Here is a legend hell bent on messing the team just for a pathetic personal record of playing 200 tests. Instead of retiring from ODIs a year back, he chose to hang in choosing his matches and upsetting the team composition's settled top order. Now he is screwing the grooming of a young deserving players by hanging on in tests when its obvious his time is up and he has nothing left to give to the team. Its not a question of his coming back to form anymore. At 39 he doesn't have more than a year to scrap through even if he comes back to form. he was fortunate he made a test team at the age of 17 when many established players with many seasons of hard work were being ignored. Now instead of making way for a younger player who may have worked as hard, he is insulting his past record, the game and his fans equally instead of retiring with dignity. After Azharuddin's fall, SRT's attitude hurts me the most now. Having grown up on these two master-bats, I find it frustrating that neither has any iota of self-honesty so necessary for a sportsman. For a guy who had accused Azharuddin of being selfish as a team man at the end of his disastrous second tenure as captain, his willingness to overlook his own selfishness [first exposed when he chose to play IPL through his injuries and skipped national duty in WI in tests for resting] is even more appalling! When he does retire from international cricket altogether, it will be just another day for me not worth commenting or complimenting anymore.

He had enough chances to retire gracefully but selfishness for needless records and need to stay in team to compete in IPL got the better of his judgement. I think the selectors told him that he won't chosen in one days side as it would have made the situation uncomfortable for BCCI and he had no option but to declare his retirement after being dropped behind closed doors!

saneindian Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Happens when you overstay..had the greatest occassion one could have picked to say good bye , decided not to do so, struggled to put a decent ODI score post that, lost his form and finally had to retire. Blame lies entirely on him. In anycase he still is playing Tests and once again, depending on how well he times the retirement, will get the farewell he so richly deserves.

There was always that huge financial reason to not retire, irrespective of what he achieved and whether he blocked a place for a youngster or no. he highlighted his priorities by skipping the tests in WI to play IPL despite injury. No respect left for him in me anymore on just that one count where he failed to set an example. His lie of how he loves tests the most over money was caught pants down then. Truly great people recognize the magnitude of an occasion. The mediocre ones fail to use it wisely and settle for something less. he sacrificed Sachin Tendulkar the legend with a chance at cult status to Sachin Tendulkar, the money maker. Maybe Ambani had a hand in it to ensue his brand value as team's icon player didn't suffer and WC glory could be milked in IPL. Either way, poor judgement and poorer results now!

I don't think Sachin's finances were largely impacted by the extra 1.5 years of ODI cricket he played after the World Cup. He hardly played ODI cricket since the World Cup. He played a series in Australia and then the Asia Cup. Thats about it! His endorsements and what not are not going away now that he's retired from ODI cricket, so to say that he stayed on in ODI cricket for the endorsements that would have come from 50 ODI centuries doesn't make sense, especially since he retired on 49.
