Ultimate_Game Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Fair point but Jaggi should be in the queue - I am talking about immediate options. Once Jaggi comes in the LOI setup we can of course reevaluate. This should be the ideal time evaluate our options. With 2 years to go for the WC, which is in Aus, we need to look at our top order. Somehow Gambhir doesn't convince me he is the answer in Aus with his wafts/pokes outside off. As for Rahane he somehow doesn't seem to get a big score even if he gets in - something he has in common with Rohit - and it's no surprise his prefered format based on stats in Tests/FC.
Ultimate_Game Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 If ICFers have their way' date=' we will see a new Indian team every game. :giggle:[/quote'] Well if the laying XI has batsmen averaging in 30s whereas couple of guys have an average in 50s in odis, isn't it a reasonable ask as to why those batsmen are not in the team setup :dontknow: Just like we would want to know why Jiwanjot is not in the Test squad if he continues to perform the way he has this year, next couple of seasons as well.

There is a huuuuuuuuuuuge gap between domestic cricket and international cricket.
Number Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 There is a huuuuuuuuuuuge gap between domestic cricket and international cricket. 2 grade B domestic teams smashed this England side. Such a huge gap..
Ultimate_Game Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 There is a huuuuuuuuuuuge gap between domestic cricket and international cricket. That's what we would want to find out by trying out these youngsters. If they look so out of depth you send them back but if let's say you find a decent opening bat, you have hit pay-dirt. The reason you need to do this exercise right now is coz you need to have the core team for the WC pretty soon. To me I see a gap in the top order with Gambhir/Sehwag and to an extent Rahane not able to give us solid starts by scoring big. Let's say if Jaggi turns out to be someone who puts a prce on his wkt, though has a lower SR, wouldn't you want him in the team? Same with Jadhav at lower order as a replacement for Yuvi/Raina in case the need arises.
NareshK Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 ^^Once you pick a player, you have to give him a long enough run to prove himself. Dropping players all the time wont do the team any good.
rkt.india Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 But Jaggi is a specialist opening batsman and should be given a go at the top and we will need a solid no. 3 and Pujara fits that role nicely. Jaggi is a middle order batsman.
Vivek.S.123 Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 If your picking Jadhav as a finisher, I would rather have Ambati Rayudu. Rayudu should be our #7 with Raina moving to #5. Basically, our top 7 should be: 1. Gautam Gambhir / Shikhar Dhawan 2. Ajinkya Rahane 3. Cheteshwar Pujara 4. Virat Kohli / Yuvraj Singh 5. Suresh Raina 6. MS Dhoni 7. Ambati Rayudu
Cevno Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Manoj Tiwary should be back after 3rd ODI, according to a few people on Twitter. Has gone to NCA to prove fitness. Rayudu should be next in the middle order as he can play both hitter and normal batsman role.
Ultimate_Game Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Jaggi is a middle order batsman. He bats at 3 in odis and I would promote him as an opener and keep Pujara at 3. Or you could have Pujara as an opener and Jaggi at 3. My point was was that Jaggi & Pujara should be considered for the top order with Jadhav as a late order option.

In case any batsman goes out of form, you will at least have credible backup.
Cevno Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Yeh, Jaggi kahan se aa gaya ? Rahane, Jaggi and Pujara in top 3 together would be too slow. Need to open with Rahane and Pujara and give them a good run. Rayudu/Tiwary can come into the middle order. Mukund/Dhawan are the other opening options.

In Australia & NZ, being 50/1 after 15 overs will win you more games than being 60/3. You have to note that with 2 new balls, 2 bouncers an over and with 5 fielders in the circle at all times, a solid start will be imperative. Now if the WC were to be held in sub-continent we could have gone ahead with Sehwag but in Aus/NZ a solid top order is a must-have.

Need batsman who can score quicker too everywhere. With how ODI's have evolved you cannot have 3 accumulators out of 3 in the top 3. Maybe divided across the batting order but not in top 3 together.

Ultimate_Game Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Rayudu should be picked ahead of Jadhav Not really, no. Rayudu averages 33 in List A cricket with just 1 hundred. Jadhav averages 53 with 4 100s at a SR of 108. It's not even close. Jaggi averages 54 with 4 100s but at a lower SR of 78 which should be good enough as long as he can provide a solid start and play big innings.

A lot of intl players have been saying good things about Rayudu. He has good technique and temperament as well. He has proved it in the IPL for 3 seasons in a row already. Rayudu should be our finisher in ODIs, with Raina moving up the order

Likes of Jaggi and Jadhav have done the hard yards in domestic cricket, which should be the yardstick for selection for odis & Tests. Unless there's an asterisk against Jaggi & Jadhav's performances they should get a shot in the team ahead of Rayudu, Murali Vijay etc.

Rayudu has been improving every IPL. There is a huge difference between IPL and domestic. In IPL, ur playing against intl bowlers and in front of packed houses with intimidating atmosphere. Whereas in domestic, ur playing against Z-Grade trundlers on flat pitches where even Sir Jadeja can hit Triples.

Try to separate the formats and don't fall into Srinivasan/Rajiv Shukla trap of treating all formats the same and picking players for odis & Tests based on IPL's performances.
