Muloghonto Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 By far the least well known and lowest profile philosopher from India, who IMO is by far the greatest thinker India has produced in the last millenia and definitely the greatest hindu thinker ever. I rank him third, behind Buddha and Nagarjuna as the most illustrious son of our soil in the branch of philosophy, humanism and social thinker. Followed closely by Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Its too bad that Bengali reneissance happened in the 1800s under the British and petered out by the time India became independent, for their social liberation was one of the most advanced and forward thinking phenomena of voluntary social change in India, an otherwise socially stagnated and intractable land, since the days of Buddhism and Jainism flourishing in INdia two millenias ago.

I beg to differ. It came at the right time. Not only in terms of putting a fire in India, and Indians, but also in terms of uplifting Indian society and inspiration at the time India really needed it. The list of Bengalis between late 18th century to modern day 20th century is a virtual who's-who of India and no other Indian state/province would even remotely come close. Sample a few names.. Raja Rammohan Roy Vivekanand Ishwar Chandra Vidysagar Bankim Chandra Chatterjee Michael Madhusudan Dutt Sharat chandra chattopadhya SN Banerjee Bipin Chandra Pal Tagore etc You can also include the gentleman who created rosgulla in the mix :winky:

By 1940, Bengali revolution was sustained by momentum only, as the bulk majority of the thinkers and developers you've mentioned were dead/old men & retired by then. The Bengali revolution ultimately didn't overlap with Independent India very much ( the cultural & social development of Bengal lasted only till the early 50s before it stagnated and disappeared) and i think it'd have been far more effective in the Bengal and India context if the major movers and shakers were on average 20-25 years later than they were.
