CUTTACK: Rattled by vehement protests against the state hosting the Pakistani team for the women's cricket World Cup to be played out here from February 1, the government has arranged accommodation for the players right inside the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. "The Pakistani players would have faced trouble while travelling from Bhubaneswar to Cuttack for the matches. So we have arranged for their accommodation on the Barabati Stadium premises," said Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Asirbad Behera. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bajrang Dal had warned hoteliers in Bhubaneswar against offering hospitality to the Pakistani players, following which posh hotels in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack showed reluctance in providing accommodation to the Pak players, forcing the decision to house the players on the stadium premises. Political parties like Kalinga Sena and Utkal Bharat have also been threatening to disrupt the matches of the Pakistani team. "The accommodation of the Pakistan team had turned out to be a headache for us, but finally we have managed to solve the problem," said an OCA official. Five star hotel facilities will be provided to the Pak players at the Club House in the stadium where the players are to stay, said Behera. "The Club House is equipped with a world class gymnasium and swimming pool. Other arrangements have also been made to provide the best facilities to the Pakistani players," he said. Security in and around Barabati Stadium has been beefed up ahead of the matches. At least 500 security personnel have been deployed and 55 CCTV cameras have been installed at the stadium to ensure security to the players. Director general of police (DGP) Prakash Mishra visited the stadium on Sunday to review the security set-up and held discussions with OCA officials about the arrangements. "Matches involving the Pakistan team will be played at Barabati and elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure foolproof security to the players," the DGP said after reviewing the arrangements. The OCA has also decided to restrict the entry of visitors to the stadium for matches involving Pakistani players. "Only gallery number 1 and 2 will be opened for visitors. Visitors will be allowed to enter the stadium after a thorough scanning by security personnel. We have also appealed to visitors not to bring any water bottles and food packets along," said Behera. The matches involving Pakistan team will be held exclusively at Barabati Stadium, while matches of other teams will be played at the DRIEMS ground in Tangi.

How would we feel if our national cricket team was to he put insidea stadium (irrespective of how good the facilities are) for safety purposes? If you cannot guarantee their safety, do not host a tournament like WC or at least postpone it by a few weeks. First the BCCI shifted the WC from Wankhede Stadium to local grounds , moved some teams to Cuttack where again play WC matches at some unknown grounds. If the BCCI thinks the Women's WC is not as important , why even agree to host it? Hopefully though, the players go out, compete well and have a memorable WC. P.S The semis and finals are scheduled to be played in Mumbai. What will the BCCI/ICC do if Pakistan make i to the knock out rounds.

The facilities are good there. Its like a hotel which is within the premises of the stadium and they are not living in dressing rooms. How can you say they are not provided good facilities without seeing what's available there ? Paki propaganda much ?

The first and foremost responsibility of the ICC and BCCI is to ensure safety of the players and make sure no untoward incident takes place. Everything else is secondary. If the facilities at the stadium are comparable to the hotel which the other players are staying, I don't see what the problem is.

They are not living in car garage. Situation between Ind-Pak is not good and under the circumstances, authorities are trying their best within their capability to provide security for that team and make sure everything goes off well. Its impossible to arrange Z grade security at five star hotel and have security to escort them from hotel to stadium without notice. This tournament was shifted from Mumbai only recently.

Its certainly not recommended to have them stay inside the stadium itself. A monotonous hotel=>stadium=>hotel itinerary can get depressing very soon and this sounds worse than that. I can't believe hotels as such can be a problem. With our legacy of license raj, there must be umpteen state run high end accomodations for the babus & bureaucrats.

The complete point the OP made is lost in details. I think he's trying to suggest that there should be better planning when playing an international tournament. There have been extensive media reports on the sham which others may want to look into. It is not just about this particular incident. The OP mentions other details as well.

This is not good. If there was so much problem then it was better not to host the WC. International teams stay in BBSR and go to Cuttack by road to play. Its around 20 km. Its difficult to provide security while travelling. Forget attacks, what if these morons decide to protest and sit in the road in the matchday?? Are the security forces gonna beat up 500 to 1000 protesters. It will cause lot of delay. So maybe this is the best way out.

The women's cricket team from Pakistan was coming to Mumbai to be a part of the pinnacle of their sport. Presumably, they were excited at the idea of competing against the best teams in the world- and while here take in the sights and sounds of a city they must have heard so much about. To catch a glimpse of a film star, to giggle uncontrollably while shopping - they were to be in Mumbai for the chance to make memories. To my mind, the Indian state is abdicating its duty by snubbing these sportsmen and women. A practical solution isn't necessarily the right one. Popular sentiment, only the gods above know how that is measured, can't always be the guiding principle in decision making. Here was an opportunity to be upright at the cost of being unpopular. Tell the hockey players 'you have no reason to fear, play on'. Assure the cricket girls 'come to Mumbai and play without a worry in the world. On our watch, you are safe. On our land, we guarantee your well-being. We are that kind of people. We are that kind of country'.
