I have not seen cricket from the 80's, but maybe some people could help me out here. But, our team was marred with in fightings between senior players which saw the captains changing on a series by series basis.

Gavaskar made a lot of runs playing outside the SC and we have to also remember that he never had the luxury of facing the Indian bowling. Gavaskar carried the team all by himself. In the 70s and the 80s, most of the times, when Gavaskar got out, there was a procession of wickets.
