deathmonger Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Although Dhoni has a superior record as captain, in the Dhoni vs Ganguly debate many choose Ganguly as he "made" the team instead of merely "inheriting" it like Dhoni did which in a way is true. Dhoni's successes had been primarily due to the likes of Sehwag,VVS,ZAK etc. This also extends to ODIs. The ODI WC win was built on the backs of ZAK and Yuvi (Two of the biggest Ganguly's boys). But now Dhoni has a chance to "make" a team. The 4-0 win was delivered by young 20-somethings and while the old guard still had members among the team they contributed almost nothing to the win. If Dhoni gets success during this away leg we have (may not necessarily be wins. Ganguly's team drew in England and Oz) he will have sealed the Ganguly vs Dhoni debate in his favour. Afternote: The T20 2007 was 100% Dhoni's. After the WC debacle leading a young team to victory was amazing. ODIs were kind of a 50-50 as many of Dhoni's big wins (CB series, WC) had the likes of SRT, Viru, ZAK, Yuvi etc. Although with the retirement/dropping of SRT,Viru,ZAK it can be said to be Dhoni's team completely and he has delivered decent, if not outstanding results with this team. The team that defeated Eng 3-2 could be called the first truly Dhoni team. CT will be interesting as it will be a very young team with Dhoni himself being the oldest at 31.
saneindian Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Ganguly got many series with BD and Zim to build 'his team', Dhoni will have his chance to do the same away from home vs SA, Eng and Aus in next 2 years lol Most of Dada's successes were due to Dravid, Sachin, Kumble, VVS..all Azhar's boys Azhar is the best 'team creator'

Most of Ganguly's successes were due to Azhar's boys. Also from his own boys Bhajji and Viru were also responsible. Dhoni's successes were a combination of Ganguly's and Azhar's boys. Out of Azhar's lot - SRT, VVS played well. Kumble had retired and Dravid was a shadow of his former self during Dhoni's captaincy except for that final flourish. Out of Ganguly's lot it was ZAK who came into his own under Dhoni and Viru. Bhajji was sucky under Dhoni. Now that I think of it, Dhoni never really had a good spinner playing under him till Ashwin/Ojha/Jadeja. Most of his wins came due to ZAK and the other pacer (Ishant,Sreesanth) bowling their occasional magical spells (Though Bhajji did well on some dustbowls). But now except for SRT the entire team consists of Dhoni's boys. Let's see what happens. Fun times ahead.
saneindian Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 lol there is nothing called a captain team. People ho do well at domestic level get into the national side. How many of Azhar' boys or Ganguly's boys or Dhoni's boys have done well at international level despite having a poor FC record in domestic cricket? Pujara, Kohli, Ashwin, Jadeja are not successful due to Dhoni but because they had the talent and werw willing to put in the hard work. Same goes for Zaheer, Sehwag, Bhajji etc under Dada. At best captains give a player some confidence, some surity about his place in the side, rest of it is purely due to the individual player's hard work and his own skill.

No I mean in the sense that they were backed after failures. It would have been very easy for Dhoni to drop Kohli after Sydney but he didn't. Also giving Jadeja, one of the most hated men in Indian cricket a test debut.
Junyfan Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 will be hard for dhoni to pass asli test as overseas records suggest.
deathmonger Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 will be hard for dhoni to pass asli test as overseas records suggest. Was an old team. Same team won in Eng 2007, WI 2006, WI 2011, NZ 2009, Pak 2004. Drew in Eng 02, Oz 04, SA 11, SL 10 plus respectable losses in Oz 07,SA 06. This 4-0 shows it was just a blip. We are back to our rightful position as a great team.
Raghav_12 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I think Dhoni should leave captaincy when on high of 4-0. Noway he's gonna do anything good either as captain or as player on tours of SA, NZ and Eng. He'll be shown door well before indian season of 2014-15 begins with record of coceding maximum number of defeats as Indian captain. He's not gonna be lucky like this Australian tour once again. It's in his interest if he quits captaincy on his own after this series else it's gonna be further downhill from here.

Replace Dhoni with a certain other name, remove the references to captaincy and even then it continues to make sense :--D
Subeshkumar Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 he has proved himself i liked the way he leaded the team
FischerTal Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Che is the only player that has temperament to be captain. Kohli, despite being a good cricketer is too rash
