This is not to say that he is not patriotic to have replied ‘I am from India’ but he loves his state so much for the pride it has brought to him as well his motherland, India. I fully justify his response without any hesitation. The state of Kerala with a population of over 33 million people can boast a literacy rate of little under 100 percent, the highest in India for any state. Kerala has the lowest population growth rate; 3.44%. The state has the Highest Development Index (HDI). It has the lowest homicide rate among Indian states; 1.1 percent per 100,000. A survey conducted by the Transparency International ranked Kerala as the least corrupt state in India. During my visit to this beautiful state I found it had a lot of resemblance to my homeland, Sri Lanka. It grew the same agricultural products as coconut, coffee, tea, rubber, cashew and spices, as in my country. The prevailing culture as well as the attire adopted by the people was almost the same. However, what I admired most there was the unity among all communities of different faith. Kerala consists of 56.2 percent Hindus, 24.7 percent Muslims, 19 percent Christians and others 0.1 percent. They all live like one family. Even in families you may find on and off differences disputes but not among the different communities in Kerala. Have you ever heard any bomb blasts or even clashes between communities there? The answer is ‘Never!’ God bless them all! This is one reason the communal parties of North India could not make any inroads in Kerala. I guess the education there has played a major role for peace, harmony and stability of the state. I recall here what Mahatma Gandhi once said; “Educate one man, you educate one person but educate a woman and you educate a whole civilization.†Kerala should be a role model not only for other states in India but for all neighboring countries if they want to live in peace and prosperity. The accolades for the Responsible Tourism (RT) model came at a recent meeting of UNCTAD in Geneva, which brought together experts, policymakers and diplomats as well as representatives of international organisations and civil society. "Kerala has become a model for tourism development for the entire India," said Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary General of UNCTAD. Addressing the meeting, Suman Billa, tourism secretary -Kerala, said the state had turned tourism into a driver of economic growth without compromising on ecology and by integrating the interests of local people. Kerala had identified tourism as an engine of its economic growth nearly a decade and a half ago. In 2007, the state adopted RT as the bedrock of its Tourism Policy while four pilot destinations - Kumarakom, Kovalam, Wayanad and Thekkady - were chosen for implementing RT practices. At Kumarakom, near Alppuzha, the department partnered with the local-self government and women self-help groups to forge a strong stakeholder network and set up exclusive committees to drive the activities. The government constituted a 40-member state-level Responsible Tourism committee. It was followed by the formation of destination- level Responsible Tourism committees to take the initiative forward at the destination-level. One of the most significant components of RT is the identification of Kudumbashree, a poverty eradication mission, as the partner for local production and services. Kudumbashree has now grown into a movement encompassing 200,000 neighbourhood self-help groups of women, he added. Gujarat Riots occured after the burning of 59 Hindu Kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya by Muslim tea vendors at Godhra railway station. In response to this violent act, Hindus across Gujarat retaliated in violence towards Muslims living around them. According to govt figures, 700+ muslims died and 400+ hindus died. Not a genocide, but a riot that has been witnessed before in Indian history, especially Gujarat in 1985 and 1969 under Congress rule

Your inability to understand Gujarat's prosperity and security directly translates into your personal dislike for Modi, because as I have said before, you only see him through 2002. Also, Kerala's prosperity is directly linked to religious reasons. The money that fundamentalist Christian/Muslim organizations bring to Kerala play a big role in its economy. I dont want that economy in gujarat, simple.

yoda Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Literacy rate may be high, however I am not sure Kerala has a single institute of repute there. Seems like they are content with getting people over the basic literary requirement. One thing I liked about Kerala is that the place is clean, people are clean and overall they try to keep their state clean and tidy.
