It maybe the best city to live in according to some survey done by study group which was hitherto unheard of. But the fact of the matter is that there is absolutely nothing to do in Surat. A positive for Surat is that it has a good mix of people. It is fairly cosmopolitan. You've got a substantial number of Punjabis, Marwaris, Bohris, Memons, Khojas, Baghdadi Jews, Marathis and ofcourse Gujaratis staying there. All adding their own unique flavour to the city. Excerpts from a post of mine from some years ago, relevant to the topic IMO, I think that's going to be one of the deciding factors of how good a city is in India (future).
Holysmoke Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Cities in gujarat are in general boring because of the ban on alc.. you can't go get a drink, etc. Either you go out for dinner, or you go for a movie.. not much more in terms of entertainment. But I can vouch for Surat being super clean now. I guess so much diamond money shows up somewhere.

But I can vouch for Surat being super clean now. I guess so much diamond money shows up somewhere. I wouldn't go so far and say that all cities in Gujarat are boring. They aren't. Jamnagar, for instance is much more 'hep' than Surat or Ahmedabad. Its also more relaxed. Its also has a lot to do with the kind of people in the city. Jamnagar also has a huge infulx of white collared workers who are employed in the Reliance facilities over there. In fact, I would say even infrastructure wise, Jamnagar scores ahead of Surat. I've even heard very good things about Rajkot. I remember this once, when after dinner we wanted to have an ice cream. My moms pet peeve. And we drove around for a while only to find everything shut. And it wasn't even 9:30pm yet. After a while a cop car flagged us down and asked us if there was any problem, and what we were looking for so 'late' at night. Then they went on to point direct us to the nearest ice cream parlour which was running, with shutters down of course!!! Luckily, our work at Surat was wrapped up in a few days. Haven't been there since. My father keeps going there on and off and says that he likes the place. And don't' even get me started on Ahmedabad. Its just a more populated version of Surat. WRT to diamond working, its Mumbai and Opera House's loss that the karigars have decided to shift to Surat. Surat was always a diamond polishing hub, but there has been a massive influx of karigars from Mumbai to Surat since 2007. Even in terms of manufacturing, many people are shifting their units entirely, or at least in most of their production capacity from in and around Mumbai to Surat/Vapi/Ankleshwar and Bharuch, thanks to the brilliant policies of the Congress-NCP combine. But that's a rant for another day. So what do you actually want to do? I'm just asking :D
