Coal-Gate: 'Erosion of faith,' says Supreme Court about CBI sharing report with government

The Supreme Court has castigated the CBI sharply today for showing a report on its coal investigation to the government before submitting it to judges last month. "Sharing information with the government has shaken the entire process," the judges said. Today, the judges said that the CBI must explain why the agency did not reveal that the report had been shared when the document was given in a sealed cover to the court on March 12. The judges had then asked the agency's chief to state in writing that the report had not been seen by "the political executive." Last week, CBI director Ranjit Sinha said in an affidavit that the report had indeed been vetted by Law Minister Ashwani Kumar and a senior bureaucrat each from the Coal Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office. The judges asked the CBI today if the facts do not suggest "a total erosion of faith this court placed in you." Before the hearing began, the CBI chief Ranjit Sinha told NDTV that when he screened the report, the Law Minister did make changes to the document, but Mr Sinha said he could not recall the amendments. In Parliament, the Opposition has been demanding the Prime Minister's resignation for his government's alleged attempt to interfere with the CBI's investigation into why and how coal fields were allotted to private firms without a transparent bidding process. The Opposition's charges have been corroborated by one of the government's most senior law officers, Assistant Solicitor General Harin Raval. In a letter last night to Attorney General GE Vahanvati, he has said that Mr Vahanvati lied to the court that neither he nor the government had seen the document. Mr Raval alleges that the stand taken by Mr Vahanvati forced him to misrepresent the facts to the court.

huh, Abit of an understatement. The CBI is Congress' lapdog. Which was more than evident in the last few months.

independence of CBI has been hogwash for long. But the way this government has manipulated this agency in unprecedented. Even congress supporters openly feel that it has been compromised beyond limits. These observations of SC is particularly damning for mr. prime minister as law minister tried to look at the CBI draft report to avoid potential embarrassment to PM only. Till now there were doubts mainly on the capability of Mr Manmohan Singh not on integrity. That seems to be changing soon.
