1983-2011 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 India and China have simultaneously withdrawn their troops from the face-off point at Daulat Beg Oldie near the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, PTI has reported, quoting official sources. Reportedly, the agreement was reached after high-level negotiations from both sides and the withdrawal was completed at 7:30 pm. This ends the deadlock that began when Chinese troops set up camp 19 kms into Indian territory in the Depsang Valley in Ladakh on April 15. Soon after, India has set up its own post just 500 kms away. Three flag meetings between commanders on both sides had failed to resolve the stand-off. India wanted the Chinese troops to withdraw completely; China denied any incursion. Not satisfied with the way talks to resolve the issue were proceeding, India had indicated that it would perhaps cancel External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid's upcoming trip to China, sources had told NDTV earlier this week. Mr Khurshid had said, that he couldn't "predict with certainty" whether he would be travelling to Beijing for his scheduled visit beginning May 9. Wait for the details to emerge, we would have conceded our rights to develop infrastructure on that border, the primary aim of Chinese incursion. Surprisingly nothing in China Daily about such a deal. No official comment by our MEA either. A nicely planed story floated in our MSM. Most strategic and defense analysts are calling this a sell out if true.

Well under the circumstances and considering the govt., I am satisfied with this effort.

Both sides have now withdrawn their troops to positions held prior to April 15, the "status quo" that India had pushed for and China had not agreed to in three previous flag meetings.

It is calling mutual withdrawl because in response of Chinese incursion, Indians had also set up their tents few kms inside Chinese territory and were not ready to budge until Chinese move out. Finally it has been agreed that both parties will go back to positions where they were a month back, simultaneously. I am no Congress supporter, but it is good diplomacy. Results acheived without any harm done to anybody.

Results acheived without any harm done to anybody. IDK whether we set up a tent inside or outside but we are back to the position "before April 15" and that itself is good diplomacy. My comment was based on one report where I read that in Indians too had set up tent on chinese side in retaliation of this incursion and as part of mutual withdrawl we would pull out as well. But after reading more sources, it looks I was wrong and Indian had set up their posts within India border, though too close to the place where Chinese had set up their tents. So I was wrong here. Yet I would say that it was good diplomacy.
