Precambrian Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 For a nation with fewer resources and population than kerala, sri lanka has done a fine job in int cricket
Magneto Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 For a nation with fewer resources and population than kerala' date=' sri lanka has done a fine job in int cricket[/quote'] :agree: They have done an awesome job.
saurabhg1 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 For a nation with fewer resources and population than kerala' date=' sri lanka has done a fine job in int cricket[/quote'] How does it matter ?? whatever be the population, only 11 are allowed to step on the field at any time
Crookbond Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 How does population matter? :dontknow: It's not like the ICC goes to SL on a family planning drive distributing/encouraging the use of contraceptives.
Tendulkar_Bhai Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Population matters as bigger population increases your chances of finding a good player and also increases the competition for places, demand for facilities etc..isnt it obvious

Crookbond Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Obvious but fallacious. Larger population does not equate to better talent - unless you can prove me that 1 in every 100 children born have some cricketing talent. It's just a larger cricket pool to select from; it does not necessarily mean that the larger pool is of better quality. Australia have had the best cricket record history despite being a sparsely populated country.
Zelig Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Brazil - Soccer, Volleyball China, US, former Soviet Union - so many individual sports Having a bigger pool is definitely an advantage as long as you also have the right infrastructure, which India doesn't possess obviously.

This is what i meant... it matters only if you have the infrastructure in place like in SA, Eng, Aus.. and sadly the infrastructure had been missing in India for a long time
Thief Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 For a nation with fewer resources and population than kerala' date=' sri lanka has done a fine job in int cricket[/quote'] so true we maybe an tiny island nation but we have done well not only in cricket,Susanthika jayasinghe made whole asia proud by clinching silver in Sydney Olympics tht was de first track medal an asian won after 40 odd yrs:two_thumbs_up: ,frm 2002 till nw SL hold de record for 100m,200m,400m asian womens record, in rugby SL ranked 5th in asia were as bigger nations likes of india rank way way back ,we r a sporty nation tht fight till de end irrespective of de result.I thank you:hatsoff: for pointing out this important fact tht most members ignore when they bash sri lanka, most ICF members have little respect for SL cricket i do not knw why such hatred towards SL, is it pure racism or jealousy ?

Square Drive Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 SL has done well even without a considerable percentage of their talent pool due to various reasons; -had to maintain a big military because of the war (this is where you'll find most athletic men). War ended but still maintains a large military. Also the youth in the entire north and east didn't get the opportunity during the war period. -unlike in Australia there is no sports culture in Sri Lanka. Kids play just for the fun. They can't aim to become professional sportsmen. Majority of parents even today don't encourage their kids to pick sports over study, instead they discourage them. Also there are still some people here see cricket as some evil colonial thing :dontknow: -and various other reasons that are common to all SC countries as well (facilities, nutrition, poverty, etc). Simply put, you'll find very few cricketers came to the SL team outside western-southern coastal areas + Kandy. They achieved a lot in cricket with all these drawbacks. That's why I supported SL last few years (of course after Ireland) :hatsoff:
