carnish Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Morkel is indeed the type of bowler I'm talking about but you need to understand that what I said will hold true on pitches with bounce which almost do not exist in the SC. Check him out in South Africa. Weren't Hilfenhaus, Starc and Pattinson such bowlers bowling at Perth with more bounce than Africa???
express bowling Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Kohli had handled bounce quite well in Australia. He has improved a lot as far as the hook and pull shots are concerned.
Gunner Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 what are you on about here ? What he meant was Tall Bangladeshis like Mushfiqur Rahim will give tough competition to the locals in the Ipl, especially for the fast bowler's spot.

carnish Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 and so does Ajit Agarkar a century at Lords. Your point? My point is Kohli has shown that he has proper technique. He has scored many centuries unlike Agarkar, who just has one. Saying that he will struggle when the pitch has help or against certain kind of bowlers is not justified for a talent of his kind. Yes, he may struggle but we need to reserve our judgement till he does, don't we?? Sorry if you disagree.

He has improved his technique since he started - scissor legs (LBW candidate). Now, his footwork is better however he is a suspect candidate when the ball moves even a little bit. He's not even close to a Pujara, Dravid or Tendulkar in terms of technique - far off. I would call someone like Pujara having proper technique. I am not making a judgment on his future, I am making a judgment on his current status. He can very well go ahead and score 10k runs but that doesn't mean his technique is textbook. Currently, my hypothesis is that he will struggle when there is bounce due to his low center of gravity approach. Slickr, He struggles outside off stump for the same reason. He loses shape (due to his stance/balance) when the ball is outside off.

Crookbond Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 why do you think Che failed in SA first time around? just nervousness of first tour/quality of bowling or was there any technique problems? I am not equating success/failure with technique, you can't. Sehwag was successful in South Africa in his first series - doesn't necessarily mean he had technique. If you were here around for the Australia series, up until Perth 2011 most people were sold out on Kohli. He suddenly scores a 100 and then becomes the toast of the nation! Coming back to your question, Pujara played 3 innings in SA 2010. Out of those 3, he got out to good balls on 2 ocassions and he threw away 1 wicket. Here's a video of one of the balls he got P78GXFd97uw No batsman in the world will survive a ball swinging from leg to off stump at 134 km/h. That's like Shane Warne albeit at Steyn's pace.

Atleast he can defend against Steyn even in such hostile batting conditions.

It's not like Raina; he has ample time but he can't keep the ball down due to the way his bat makes the arc while playing a stroke (quite unique).

I just said, he has a proper decent technique, which means even if he fails on a few innings he can come back. Its not a failed technique like Sehwag. He may struggle against the swinging balls initially, but then he has the determination to work on his technique and succeed by making slight changes.

You said he has proper technique - abhi decent add kar liya :giggle: Don't play with words! I will obviously think with what you post - there's no other way to reply for. Kohli will always be decent on the SC particularly when the ball doesn't spin. In foreign conditions, he still has a long way to go. I wouldn't ride my bets on him based on "technique". Temperament, determination ... sure but not technique.

express bowling Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Kohli's only practical problem in tests, according to me, is that about 50% of the time, he stops playing his natural game and goes into a shell. The efficacy of his batting is somewhat dependant on dominating the opposition. He should play his natural game more often in tests and he should do ok even outside the subcontinent. As far as technique is concerned, he is decent. Perfect technique is an over-rated quality especially for stroke-makers. Bradman, Richards, Sobers, Ponting, Lara, Hayden, etc. did not have perfect techniques but all of them averaged more than 50 in tests. As Kohli plays more and more outside the subcontinent, he should improve there as he is a quick learner. He is somewhat susceptible against the moving ball and ok against the short ball. But he should play his natural stroke-filled dominating game and not confuse himself with Rahul Dravid.
express bowling Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Pujara had said in an interview that he is a compulsive hooker and puller. But he is working on leaving deliveries that were head high. He is also working on playing the hooks to the ground by rolling his wrists over the ball. This interview came out in the Telegraph, Kolkata. Identifying the problem is half the work done. A sincere bloke like Pujara will surely solve his problem of hooking the ball up in the air on some occasions.
