Like most Mumbai cricketers, Atul Singh's day begins with a long commute — in his case an hour-and-a-half's journey from Airoli to the Bandra-Kurla Complex. For the lanky 18-year-old, days like Sunday make all that pushing and shoving in the entrails of a train compartment worthwhile. Singh finished the day with figures of 4/78 as Mumbai left Maharashtra at an uncertain 228/6 on Day One of the final of the Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 tournament. Three of Singh's wickets came during the first hour of play in a lethal burst of seam bowling. It was Atul's new-ball partner Akash Parkar who struck the day's first blow, removing opener Vijay Zol with a full, wide delivery that took the corner of the left hander's bat and looped to backward point. From then on, it was Atul's hour. The pacer moved new man Yassar Shaikh around the crease, testing the right-hander with a combination of out-swingers and well-directed bouncers. Shaikh finally lost patience and nicked a slash to keeper Sagar Kerkar. Pande was next to go, prodding at a perfectly pitched outswinger, edging another catch to Kerkar. Eight overs later, Atul got Maharashtra's danger man. Shubham Ranjane, who had averaged 79.28 through the tournament, had grafted his way to 26 off 60 balls before he was caught and bowled. Atul's delivery stopped a hint on Ranjane, who was through his short-arm pull too early. Skipper Nikhil Naik and Rahul Sharma helped Maharashtra rebuild from 70/4 with a 58-run-partnership, before Naik was bowled for 42, playing an ugly hoick off left-arm spinner Rahul Kadam. Sharma, who top-scored with 87, then found a stodgy ally in Vikas Nirfal. The pair hung around for two and a half hours, adding 95 runs for the sixth wicket before Sharma fell in the penultimate over of the day. Nirfal and Shamsuzama Kazi were both lucky to survive through to stumps, escaping catches off no-balls within the space of three deliveries. Nirfal, who had taken 36 balls to get off the mark, finished the day on 30 off 131 balls.

Disappointed not to see Mohsin Sayyed there. He missed out last WC at the last moment due to dengue. He is the quickest of the India pacers at his age, 17. Though 5 pacers are picked Lamba, Hooda, Atul Singh, Arothe, and Millind. Millind had poor Cooch Behar trophy picking only 11 wicekts at 46. Hooda had the most wicket. Though none of the top highest wicket taker of CB trophy is in the team. There are 9 bowlers who had more wickets than Hooda including top five SS Neral (Vidarbha), AP Parkar, (Mum), Umar Nazir (JK), Jasprit Bumrah (Guj), V Choudhary (Pj).

MUMBAI: While Mumbai's representation in Team India continues to shrink, India's U-19 team continues to witness a generous influx of the city's cricketers. As many as four Mumbai cricketers made it to the list of 15 India U-19 cricketers, which was announced on Saturday by the BCCI, for a tri-series in Australia in June-July. Opener Akhil Herdwadkar, middle-order batsmen Sarfaraz Khan and Shreyas Iyer, and fast bowler Atul Singh - have made it to the squad, which would be led by Vijay Zol of Maharashtra. The 18-year-old Herdwadkar was a part of the Indian team that won the U-19 World Cup last year too, though he didn't get a game. His Mumbai teammate, left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh, though, was one of the big stars of that triumph. Zol was a part of that team too. In what was one of their most successful seasons ever across all age group cricket, Mumbai had made it to the final of the Cooch Behar Trophy (for U-19 cricket), where they lost by 50 runs to Maharashtra, earlier this year. "It is not surprising. We won almost all titles across all age groups last year," said PV Shetty, jt secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). "This is fantastic news. All the four boys who went for the camp in Bangalore made the cut," Mumbai's U-19 coach Satish Samant told TOI. All four played well in various domestic tourneys this year. "A few months back, Herdwadkar squared up to (Australian pacer) Shaun Tait, who was undergoing rehab, in the nets. He left Tait impressed. He is fearless, and puts a price on his wicket," Samant told TOI on Saturday. Samant is full of praise with his other three wards too. "Shreyas likes to dominate attacks, while everyone in Mumbai knows about Sarfaraz's potential. Atul is a very hard-working boy too," Samant remarked. The talented Sarfaraz's career has endured a roller coaster ride so far. The 15-year-old came into the limelight after making a world record score of 439 in inter-school cricket three years back, but was then embroiled in an overage controversy after failing a bone test. Later, he was booted out of the U-16 camp conducted by the Board too. However, Sarfraz bounced back from all that by producing some quality performances both in junior and local cricket. On Friday, he smashed an unbeaten 140 off merely 95 balls in a trial game in Bangalore. "My son is only focused on the game now. He has shown great resilience to keep performing despite whatever happened in the past few years," says Sarfraz's father Naushad. Sanju Samson, who played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 6, was appointed as Zol's deputy. Wonder why we don't find Aaron's, u yadav's, Shukl'a at the u19 level, talent scouting for bowlers and selections are very poor for pacers at this level compared to batters.

The calculations faced an abrupt end when a SMS informed Zol about his appointment as the captain of the India U19 team for the tri-series in Australia. “I was sitting with friends in a room and talking about the team and the combination. One of my friends got a SMS from somewhere that I had been appointed as the captain. It was a moment of sheer joy and reward for hours and hours of hard work. I had no words at the moment, was very happy,†an ecstatic Zol told The Indian Express in an exclusive conversation. Australia didn’t turn out to be a happy hunting ground for the Maharashtra run-machine in 2012 as the left-hander, under Unmukt Chand’s captaincy in the ICC U19 World Cup, could only manage 151 runs in six matches. A lot of hopes were pinned on the elegant southpaw after his monumental 451-run knock in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2011 and a great show in the U19 Asia Cup (2012), but somehow things didn’t go the way he would have liked. After boarding the flight back home with the stars of the tournament – Unmukt Chand and Harmeet Singh – even Zol wouldn’t have thought that he’ll get another go to get his share of pie. The triumph last year was anchored by some brilliant individual performances, but consistent contributions were scarce. Captain Zol, oozing with excitement, points out on the balance in the team to play the tri-series featuring India, New Zealand and Australia. “We are a very well balanced team. There are quality spinners, batsmen and fast bowlers in our ranks. We have been together since quite some time now. And know well about each other’s game. He is a class batsman, he din't have a nice outing last time , probably he would do better this time around after the experience and fixing the issues he may have had with the moving ball. Pretty much rest are new except Akhil herdegwar , Sanju Samsom. Akhil ALSo was part of the last team , but played poorly, I'm surprised he came ahead of Sanjay ranjhane from Maharashtra since he was one of the top scorer in the cooch behar trophy. Kludeep might do well too, last time he did not have a nice tournament. Noticeably no player from DELHI , TAMIL NADU , indicates anything to anyone that 4 players are from Mumbai and none from these two states ?

Sarfaraz Khan, Mohammad Saif, CV Milind were not part of the preliminary camp at NCA. Wonder how did they get selected ?? I'm surprised by the omission of Mohammad Sayyed, supposed to be the best bowler in the 50 over version and he is just 17yrs of age. Something is fishy in the selections, as 4 players from mumbai got selected!!
