1983-2011 Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 GUWAHATI: BJP national president Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that his party is the "only secular political party", while accusing Congress of dividing people on communal lines for votes. He was addressing a party function in the city. Citing the example of minority leader Makbul Ali of Barak Valley joining BJP on Wednesday, he said the saffron party vouches for secularism and wants equitable development of all communities in the country. The issue of secularism became an issue of much debate recently after its oldest ally, Janata Dal (United), parted ways with it following elevation of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as poll campaign chief. JD(U) chief and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar broke ties with BJP, saying the move would not go down well with the minorities. "If there is any communal party, it is Congress. BJP is the only secular political party. We do not want any division between Hindus and Muslims. It is Congress that wants to create divisions and use Muslims as vote banks. We cannot make India a strong nation if some communities are left behind in the path of development," Singh said. This is Singh's first visit to the state after he became party president this year. At the meeting here, Singh also felicitated BJP candidates who won in the recent Guwahati Muncipal Corporation election. BJP won 11 of 31 ward councillor seats, emerging as a major political force in the city against Congress, which won 19 seats. At the meeting, Atul Bora (senior), a founder member of regional party AGP, also joined BJP with his supporters. The felicitation meeting was used by the party to sound the 2014 Lok Sabha election bugle, with Singh urging party workers and leaders in the state to help the BJP-led NDA form the next government at the Centre. "The performance of BJP in the municipal polls showed that the party is an alternative to Congress in the state too," he said.
