Sarkar Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 India staged the biggest comeback in the Natwest Final 2002 against England chasing 326 please share your memories and experiences of this match.I still remember I was so nervous about this match when I saw the score of 325 my reaction was this is very unlikely for India but the start sehwag and ganguly gave I believed we will win the match then there was a twist in the match 146/5 now thinking we will definitely lose the match in anger I switched the radio off.After one hour I switched the radio back on hearing yuvi and kaif putting up a good partnership The joy of India beating England in major final and also will never forget how Dada celebrated on Lords Balcony .This win of course changed our mindset in run chases. I remember how religiously I waited to record highlights courtesy of Channel 4. I would rank this trophy as one of the Major trophies India won.
kubrickian Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 It was Yuvraj and Kaif's brilliant partnership which turned the game around. When Sachin got out, they were in big trouble. I remember commentators talking about Yuvi and Kaif being the next big stars and how they were playing fearless cricket and taking on the opposition unlike some other batsmen in the past. I believe this win gave a lot of confidence to the team in ODI cricket.

MCcricket Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 That game was epic, THERE WAS THE TIME WHEN EVERYONE FELT THE EUPHORIA OF A WIN FROM HOPELESS POSITION, Kaif was hard done by, not the most talented but was discarded despite being a good odi player and decent test bat, but then our batting line up grew stronger and heavy weights made an entry.

But, only from a cold cricketing viewpoint. From a sheer adrenaline-moment viewpoint, it is unparalleled. And there is scientific evidence that events that occur when your adrenaline is really high are more memorable :-). Just emerging from the shadows of the match-fixing era. Two young guns (one of whom was a total greenhorn) shepherding the team to a win from a hopeless position. At LORD'S! The cementing of the concept of "Team" India - one with passion and team-spirit and full of Khunnas - as exemplified by Ganguly's over-the-top emotion at the end. A professional outfit devoid of match-fixers, playing to win. All this capped off by momentum carrying over to a 2003 WC finals appearance. I must agree with the OP here.

No it wasn't it was a major odi trophy series between three good teams yes before this trophy India lost 9 finals so this is a major achievement for Indian team.

I wouldn't necessarily put it in context with the match-fixing. We had moved on from it and the first step was taking in the ICC Knock Out trophy 2000 . We won THAT epic series against Australia at home and also won a Test match in the West Indies at Port of Spain (albeit losing the series). India won the ODI leg of WI tour too. So, we were well beyond the match-fixing saga. I would agree though that since the victory came from a near impossible situation with the architects being the two young guns - Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif - is what made it special viz. India were capable of winning games without their *star* players (Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid). I think it is around this time (2001 or so) that India stopped its heavy reliance of Tendulkar in particular and Sachin had more support from other members in the team.
Number Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Occasion may not be that big, but the comeback was. 180 runs reqd in 25 overs and already 5 down and all of them your main batsmen. How many teams have won from that situation. Such kind of comebacks are always glorified and rightly so.

In my mind, this match is somehow etched as a the watershed moment for India turning into an ODI force with which to be reckoned. Spot-on. The new "TEAM" India! Actually, on second thought, maybe the "Team" India concept emerged on that day in Eden in 2001!
