Prakat Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 How often have we seen this? These two are playing mostly proper cricketing shots and scoring at a fair clip. Last 10 overs have yielded 68 runs and counting. And these two are dealing purely in boundaries when they can help it. And it isn't bad batting at all. What's your favourite last wicket stand?

Crookbond Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Two of the most memorable 10th wicket partnerships I have seen have come from Nathan Astle versus England. 106* Nathan Astle - Danny Morrison vs England 1997 at Auckland Morrison joined Astle at 142-9 with NZ having a narrow lead of 11 runs with 45+ overs yet to play on the final day. Morrison, I believe was a world record holder for ducks at that time, batted for 133 balls to deny England a victory. Astle faced about the same number of deliveries I guess and England went home frustrated. 118 Nathan Astle - Chris Cairns vs England 2002 Christchurch Cairns is not your typical #11 batsman but once again this partnership was not something which you witness everyday. NZ had been set a target of 550 runs and at 333-9, Cairns (who I guess was injured) joined Astle at the crease. The pair added 118 runs in 69 balls within 55 minutes, Cairns contributing only 23 runs to the partnership. Astle hit the fastest double hundred at that time was eventually out for 222(231b) and NZ fell short by 98 runs. 57* Inzamam Ul Haq - Mushtaq Ahmed vs Australia 1994 Karachi Pakistan had been set 314 runs to win and at 258-9 and an Australian victory seemed a mere formality. Mushtaq Ahmed gusted it out with 20*(30b) to leave Pakistan requiring 3 runs to win. Warne bowls around the wicket to Inzamam, he steps out - ball spins and Healy misses a stumping to give away 4 byes and a win to Pakistan. Australia had to wait for 4 more years to pull a victory in Pakistan (1998); they had not won a Test match in Pakistan for 35 years now. Another personal favorite of mine is - 75 Anil Kumble - Sreesanth vs England 2007 Oval Sreesanth joined Kumble at 591-9 with 24 runs required to reach his maiden Test hundred. In Kumble's words - "He asked Sree[santh] to play carefully so that he could reach his 100. Sreesanth replied that he will just play his natural game." :cantstop: From 591-9 to 664-10, Indian fans and the dressing room encountered tense moments till Kumble reached his hundred. Well, despite scoring 664 no one else scored a 100 in India's entire innings!
