Sachin=GOD Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Feeling I get is, 10 years of UPA,has made the NDA governance look much better than it was. Atleast as far as investor sentiments are concerned. People forget that NDA also had its fair share of problems. It is in hind sight that everyone sees the talent of ministers. But people forget that there were scams and likes pramod mahajan was generally considered compromised. People expect one man to control everything. From all accounts, he want to. But can he ? Or rather should he ? If Modi becomes the Pm of India, I definitely see huge influx of foreign capital in India. But I also see great disillusionment in the years to follow. India has some structural issues which cannot be solved overnight. I don't think people expect one man to solve all problems. Modi has sold his "brand" in such a way as to try and convince people that he will be a one man army who will solve everything hence Modi Sarkar and not BJP/NDA Sarkar. As for disillusionment - more than the common people, I expect BJP workers and leaders who consider themselves to be "close" to Modi to be massively disappointed very soon if he does become PM.

India has some structural issues which cannot be solved overnight. Well put. India's structural issues are the concern here. What a competent government needs, is above all, a massive investment plan- hundreds of billions of dollars- into infrastructure. Better roads, rail & air services. Both in terms of connecting cities & rural areas as well as inside cities as well.

I think the vote is for the persona. People in this country have seen such timid leader for last 10 years, they desperately want somebody who commands. But the equation is simple for Modi. He will have to work with his people and allies. Or else,it will crumble in no time.
Number Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 India’s external debt at $426 billion in December Disastrous decade under our lovely sikular govt, external debt. has grown 4 fold. Incresed $ 21 bn in last 9 months.
ravishingravi Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 How much has the debt in Gujarat grown? Never realised states can have external debts.
Crookbond Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Never realised states can have external debts. So once again you can't reply to a simple question but come up with an ***** comment.
ravishingravi Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 So once again you can't reply to a simple question but come up with an ***** comment. No it was a genuine question. Can a state go borrow directly via external debts or does it have to be routed through centre ?
Number Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 How much has the debt in Gujarat grown? Has come down to 26% of GDP from 38% under Modi. Also investment expenditure of the debt has increased and capital investment has decreased considerably which will reduce debt to gdp ratio further. India's external debt to GDP ratio has grown from 20% to 23% in last 3-4 years.

You also posted an absolute number in that post. Similarly, the question I asked should be answered in the same absolute valued unit and not a percentage which is relative quantity. If I use the same metric (% of GDP) like you used for Gujarat for the UPA, India's debt %GDP has come down from 91 to 67 percent. TL;DR - Lets not play with numbers and statistics.
Crookbond Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 No it was a genuine question. Can a state go borrow directly via external debts or does it have to be routed through centre ? I was talking about debts and not "external debts". Your question is irrelevant to the original question I posed.

I believe that is public debt not the external one.
Crookbond Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I believe that is public debt not the external one. Of course, but my question was for debt and not "external debt". A debt for a state may be similar to a debt for a nation.
