I recall in one match in India-Pak series at the start of the year Dhoni had got MOTM for ome of the Indian player (Sir??) to boost his confidence.

Both played equally good roles. Dhoni edges as India still had some distance to go after Gambhir got out. A mini collapse there (like we had against SA/England could have tilted the result) Odds were higher as they had Malinga.

You are free to think as you like but in context of match Gambhir's innings was much more crucial for India. Gambhir came to crease when India didn't had less than 10 on board and soon lost second opener as well. Gambhir was on the crease from 5 runs to 225 runs. When he got out, match was more or less a formalty. On the other hand when Dhoni came to crease India was already on course to win the match.

Losing one wicket and coming in is not a pressure situation. It is always the finishing and it is always when you get closer and closer to the target pressure mounts. To his credit Gambhir played brilliantly. But Dhoni farmed the strike much better. He took on their game breaking bowlers. Facing 35 balls from Murali/Malinga and scored 39 from them.

To be fair to manic, he too believes Dhoni is a great ODI player. but disagrees with the hype surrounding Dhoni. Its a fair assumption for him to make. On this board itself, we seem to have many Dhonistas which could be a result of being a good captain (I believe he is in the ODIs), those admiring him for his looks or even those who like him cause he captains their fav franchise in addition to be a very good wicket keeper batsman. That sounds more like a veiled attack. Can you list down these hypes? For now apparently, this involves to belittle Dhoni's ODI achievements.

I have never seen Dhoni take this initiative in T20 so clealry there is some manipulation going on there....so that leaves ODI cricket....don't remember him doing that since he became the captain... so clealry the guy picks up scraps with his notouts against lesser attacks more often than not for his average... Having said that he is the only guy 'currently' I would bet on to add respectability when the scoreline is say 50/5...Kudos to him for that. A great finisher is someone who can play incredible innings like say Mike Hussey in Sydney test,Laxman against Aus and S.A,or Mike Hussey against a bowler like Ajmal in WT20.....Not Eranga,Perera etc lol

But I clearly recall I was more optimistic of India's win when Dhoni came to the crease then when Gambhir came to the crease. and I was even more optimistic when at the time of Gambhir getting out.
