Thing is. They are saying 150. How could they say that when there was no speed gun back then. Now' date=' we can say this kind of bowling looks 150 because we have seen bowlers under speed guns. People of those times had not. Even now, it is difficult to ascertain exact speed without speed gun readings. Everyone makes guesses.[/quote'] Even the speed guns are not universally accepted, here is what Kevin mitchell said My point despite very below average career several batsmen said that he was extremely quick proves the point that he was certainly fastest in west Indian lot.All of them have same height and in other abilities Ambrose and walsh are rated higher.

Not really! Brett Lee clocked 160K in New Zealand so does it mean, he was clocking 180 there. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH3EdnJyhKQ]Brett Lee FASTEST OVER OF HIS LIFE 2005 - YouTube[/ame]

Ambrose was 135-140K bowler. Walsh was even slower 135K. I have seen Walsh bowling 120K in his last years so it means he was never really quick. Those bowlers were so good because of their consistency and bounce. They will hardly swing the ball but cut of the seam and relentless accuracy from just short good length with extra bounce. Patterson is certainly quicker than these two. I am not contesting he was not quick. I already said he looked around 145K and even if 150K' date= he is not the only bowler to do that. Even Umesh Yadav and Ishant have done that.
In 1998 speed competition Walsh was recorded as 133.5 same speed as of Bishop. The fastest was Devon malcolm 141.6. Later Devon Malcolm was quoted at 156.1 in Australian newspapers. In the article which I mentioned Brett lee also said that Devon Malcolm was considered as fastest by Australian batsmen. So Walsh was 8 km slower than Devon Malcolm in 1998

It is about nasty factor and I have heard from lot of players who played with and against this guy say this guy was the nastiest and scariest. I saw that Gooch interview in which he was telling about this guy and how he really felt he could die on the pitch , this was coming from player who is supposed to be one of best players against fast bowlers.

As I said pace alone is not what makes a bowler nasty but bounce with accuracy. You do not need to be 155-160 to be nasty if you have bounce and accuracy. Brett Lee was so quick but he was rarely nasty in comparison to Shoaib.

You don't become nasty and put fear of life in batsmen with just bounce, you need some serious pace. very few bowlers in history have put fear of life in players especially after helmets came in equation. He was one of them .

145K is enough pace if someone has accurate bouncer and bounce of awkward length because of height. McGrath used to bowl such good bouncers at 135K. He does not look in category of Thomson, Lee, Akhtar, Holding from the videos I have seen. More in category of Steyn, Waqar, Donald, etc. in terms of pace. Steve Harmison made WI batsmen look like hapless lambs on a fast bouncy Barbados track in his 7/12 spell while bowling around 90 mph with his accuracy and steep bounce from short of length. He injured Gayle and he was so scared to bat against Harmison that he came out really late and lower down the order to bat again.

Mohd Irfan throw balls from 7ft plus height and upto 148-149 k pace still no batsmen has said that they feared for their lives .He is still not included in one of fearsome fast bowler category

Ironically - you are using video clip (and even worse... memory) to guess his speed :)

Because we now know what express pace looks like as we have seen that on speed guns. People o those days had not, so we have an idea. He was certainly fast but not express like Thommos, Holding, Lee, Akhtar.

Jeff Thompson looks unbelievably quick in whatever YouTube videos I have watched. He must have been the fastest bowler ever.
Agree, in one test match in perth he bowled a bouncer that landed right on the boundary line.

Patterson was NOT express' date=' but like most WI bowlers he was tall and looked damn scary.[/quote'] Yes, that is what I have been saying all along. Their purpose of bowling was more to hit the batsmen than take wickets likes of Sylvester Clark from round the stumps with his whippy action and strong shoulder used to generate quick bounce.

He actually tried to swing the ball, but wasnt mega fast, but neither were many of the post-Holding WI bowlers. Bishop was easily the quickest, before his injury. Curtly, Walsh etc were probably 140 maximum, both were clocked at mid 130's during 1996/97 series here.

Bishop's spell in 1990 to Robin Smith, one of the quickest I have seen, Walsh was also bowling along side and could easily see how different their pace was. Holding, Bishop were the quickest WI bowlers. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjgGBuRzI_8]Bishop and Walsh target Robin Smith - YouTube[/ame] This can say Bishop is easily bowing quick.

Bishop had such a good natural action , injuries not always a cause of the bowling actions but sometimes the weakness in the body areas and structure, I don't see taller bowlers lock their left foot except Patterson seems to have a good lock on his left foot while delivering to get the extra pace and bounce.
