express bowling Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Dont start me at crapthan. To be honest that match sums up the plight of the trundller who swings it in test cricket. As yes with new ball can be dangerous. But as soon as ball gets old and stops swinging they become food and drink. In that innings after that hatrick with older ball he was murdered. Look at zak in this series. Before he had genuine wheels to go with his amazing skill. Now this time he had all the skill still, was swinging it both ways with new and old ball. Had it on a string. But it was all at 78 to 80 mph and the beasts of international cricket just coped with ease. Thats why pace matters. Not saying have to be 90mph. But if bowling 80 and below its just uselss. Need to be at least operating in 83 to 87 zone as a min Agree totally. Additionally, having atleast one 90 mph bowler, adds an extra dimension to the bowling.
G_B_ Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 India IMO will be at home on green pitches. If you notice the first test v Sa the first innings when then ball and pitches did make things hard to bat on our bowlers did well. its pitches which dont offer much where we struggle in test cricket.

True, but that isn't always a good thing. Our pacers are brought up on pitches that don't offer much, so we should be better at bowling on them. Pakistan bowlers like junaid and bhatti are picking up wickets on dead tracks in the UAE, caught behind, bowled etc. They are bowling in great areas and they know how to take wickets. Once you know how to take wickets, the pitches don't play as much of a part. That's why i prefer hit the deck bowlers, who can either swing it/seam it
King Tendulkar Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 How did this guy not become our lead pace bowler? This guy was serious talent. Swung it at good pace, proper pace at times Then just loved food and got fat. Sad

JourneyMan Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 That's the thing that disturbs me the most. It's not that India didn't have any fast bowling talent. We have had prospects (and Ishant Sharma was one of them), but they disappeared as quickly as they appeared. Yadav, Aaron, Shami are all players who could turn out to be great, but what worries me is that they will end up becoming the next RP Singh/VRV Singh/Sreesanth. We need to keep these guys away from India as much as possible.
express bowling Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 We should go for pacers who can hit the deck hard and get seam movement plus bounce. It was classically called extracting life out of the pitch. I hear the term less these days. Just 140 k blah blah.... Bowlers who have the ability to swing the ball. + hit the deck hard when the need arises, have the tools to succeed in a larger range of situations. Among rookie pacers, Ravi Kiran of Hyderabad has potential to do both. Pandey, if he is bowling 135 to 140 k , will have this ability too. Shami, Aaron and Umesh too, among those who have played for India, although they are not tall. The ability to reverse the ball late is obviously a big tool of swing bowlers and late movement is mostly got by those with pace, like Shami, Yadav. Bhuvi cannot really hit the deck hard or get late reverse swing and Ishant cannot swing the ball much. This has made them more one dimensional and less wicket taking in tests.
div Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Only Umesh Yadav can compete with AUS/SA/WI bowlers, other bowlers are not strong enough..don't think Shami is a long-term prospect.
Vijy Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 We should go with a 5 bowler attack, and have 2 allrounders as many on the thread have mentioned. Jaddu's inclusion is a must - even he is bad, he won't leak too many runs and his fielding is v. good. For the second all-rounder, we need a pace-bowling all-rounder and a spin-bowling all-rounder. On Indian pitches, Ashwin can do the latter and so can Rassool. As for pace-bowling all-rounders, time to give Rishi Dhawan a go.

Vijy Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I dont know how good Rishi Dhawan will be but fully agree with what you say' date=' especially the need of a medium pace all rounder!![/quote'] Unfortunately, can't think of many alternatives. The thing is, since this is a 5 bowler attack that I advocate, we need someone to bat at 7 and lower. Although Jaddu is terrible, I think he can improve. In India, I'd have Ashwin at 7 (or even 6). Overseas, I think Rishi can bat at 7 (hopefully). We don't have many alternatives: a) Irfan - too prone to injury and loss of swing. b) Nayar - FTB whose bully whose bowling serves mostly as filler c) Binny - bits-and-pieces cricketer not suited to Tests d) BK - even his FC record doesn't suggest a No.7 batter. So, if not Rishi Dhawan as a pace bowling all-rounder, then who?
express bowling Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 LR Shukla is batting well this season. Bowls seam up. Don't know abound his pace though. He is more of a batting alrounder. I want to know how Rishi Dhawan bats. If he is even considered for the no.7 slot, has to be a decent batter. None of the above mentioned alrounders have the pace to play as out and out pacers.

Exactly. If someone has actually see Rishi D bat, it would be nice if they share their thoughts. He does have a decent avg, which ought to indicate that he is capable of some useful knocks. But then, I keep reminding myself that Sir Jaddu has an avg of around 55 in Ranjis (and nearly 50 in FC).

I am not sure he'll do justice to the all rounder tag. That said he looks like a promising bowler!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJVXoZnSTHA]Bouncer by Ishwar Pandey - YouTube[/ame]
shortbread Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 India bowling attack shami yadav aaoran rishi No WAY!! Add a spinner into the mix and we have a horribly LOOONG tail.
Brainfade Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 This guy was serious talent. Swung it at good pace, proper pace at times Then just loved food and got fat. Sad Are you sure about that? I thought he got injured and never really recovered fully. Sadly, it has happened to a lot of our guys in the past decade.
Brainfade Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 We know we are desperate when we want to pick fast bowlers just because: (1) they can bowl the occasional snorter for which there is video evidence. (2) they have good seam position. (3) they bat at #7 for their FC team. Sad because there don't seem to be any real metrics (wkts, SR, ER ...) on which to base these selections.

Rishi Dhawan, Pankaj Singh and Ishwar Pandey have all got good stats, both in their career, and the last 2 seasons as well.
