There are a whole heap of expeditions to Antarctica during summer, I recommend you check them out. Especially worth checking out are the expeditions from Argentina in South America.

I flew over couple of times near to north pole in commercial flights of Emirates. The one that goes from Dubai to LA. Scenery looks similar to this one though distantly only. Of course South Pole is much colder and Ice covered than North pole and experience of commercial flight is much inferior than experience of an excursion flight, yet I had found that surreal. I can probably imagine how goose-bumby it would have been to go that close to Antarctica. And what do you know, the Lenin statue is facing Moscow! Take my word for it, the ice is really, really thick! Those cargo freighters are not small by any means, they are freaking huge! awesome pics skydiving, antartica- dude you are the man!! Looking at the picture, there is no place for the ship to manoeuvre, the ice has formed around it.

They didn't seem too fussed - They had enough supplies to last them weeks and weeks on end. Not to mention, it was summer time in Antarctica so sunshine 24/7.
