Switchblade Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Kiwi all-rounder Corey Anderson will be prime target in IPL auctions http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/ipl/news/Kiwi-all-rounder-Corey-Anderson-will-be-prime-target-in-IPL-auctions/articleshow/29458521.cms Corey Anderson was an unknown quantity till a few days back, but with a couple of weeks to go for the IPL auctions, he has suddenly become hot property. The all-round skills of the burly New Zealander have made franchise owners sit up and take note. Come auction day, on February 12, there will be quite a few franchises willing to splurge their dollars on him. Chennai Super Kings have always preferred a side full of all-rounders and Anderson will be perfect for the team. But CSK, along with Mumbai Indians, might find it difficult to get him, because they have already spent a big purse in retaining five players. "It will be interesting to see where Anderson is placed in the auctions...It's unlikely that he will be a marquee player and most of the teams might have spent quite a bit when his name comes up. Teams like CSK and MI, who have already spent a lot, may find it difficult to spend a huge sum on Anderson," an IPL insider told TOI. Moreover, CSK have Dwayne Bravo in their side and they still have the option of retaining Albie Morkel using their matching card. "He is doing well in Ram Slam T20...One won't be surprised if CSK settle for Albie, who is not playing international cricket any more," the source said. The teams that still have a big purse left --- Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Daredevils --- may go all out for this Kiwi sensation who holds the record for the fastest ODI century. "Getting a good price in the IPL is a lot about timing. Anderson has struck gold at the right time...His knocks have come at a time when the franchises are keenly following the developments. And more so, he is doing it against India," WV Raman, the newly-appointed batting coach of KKR, said. It was pretty much the same for Aussie Glen Maxwell last year. He had done well for Australia and in the Big Bash just ahead of the auctions and became the only million-dollar man of last year's IPL. Maxwell, though, couldn't live up to the expectations and MI released him this year. According to TA Sekar, one of the directors of Delhi Daredevils, Anderson is a much safer bet. "Anderson's bowling gives him that extra edge. Even though I believe he is a batting all-rounder, the Kiwi has the potential to shape up into a useful cricketer who can perform a dual role," Sekar analysed. Anderson has bowled well in the current India series, picking up 10 wickets with his medium-pace. Skipper Brendon McCullum is happy to bowl him at the death as well and he has got MS Dhoni out on a couple of occasions. "The best thing about Anderson is that he is a young guy...He can be a long-term prospect for any team and even if he takes the first season to get used to Indian conditions, the franchise that gets him can reap the rewards from the second year," Sekar added.

Switchblade Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 India experience will help in reviving Delhi's fortunes: Gary http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/ipl/news/India-experience-will-help-in-reviving-Delhis-fortunes-Gary/articleshow/29500502.cms The Daredevils might have ended last in IPL 6 but former India coach Gary Kirsten feels it is an opportunity for the beleaguered side to do well this season and said his experience with Team India will help him in his new role as head coach of the Delhi Franchise. "You got to come out and do work hard, give it your best shot. Sometimes, when the team has not done well, that is not a bad thing. Because, you have an opportunity to really improve. I am looking forward to the Delhi Daredevils having a successful future," said Kirsten, who had coached the Indian side to win the 2011 cricket World Cup. "There is lot of work we have to do, we have to put a squad together. We have to get lot of the pieces of the puzzle in place. I got a bit of experience in India. I am sure it is going to help me. But then, there is no guarantee out there, in terms of performance," he told reporters here. The Delhi team finished at the bottom of the table in IPL last year and it signed Kirsten as the head coach for a period of three years starting from 2014. Kirsten said he is excited to take over as head coach for Delhi Daredevils. "I am looking forward to that. It is nice to be back in India. I love this place. People of India have been good to me. I look forward to the new challenge. It is a different place," he said. "IPL cricket is different to international cricket. So, I look forward to experiencing that and understanding that. And again, working with some of the young Indian players. I'm looking forward to that. To be in a country that loves the game of cricket like India does, is very exciting." Asked about cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's retirement, Kirsten said Tendulkar is an icon from whom he learnt a lot. "End of an era of an icon to the game. It was a privilege to have some time to work with him, with the Indian team. I really enjoyed it. I learnt a lot from him," he said. Refusing to comment on the recent performances of Team India, Kirsten wished Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men to do well. "I am not really here to talk about the Indian team. I watch their performances and want them to do well. I credit some good relationships with the guys. I look forward to them doing well," he said.

Switchblade Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 No Pakistan players in 2014 IPL auction http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/61342/no-pakistan-players-in-2014-ipl-auction A total of 233 capped players were named in the list for the 2014 IPL auctions but the list did not contain any Pakistan players while big names such as Michael Clarke and Kumar Sangakkara were conspicuous by their absence. In a register of capped players released to the franchises, 46 players each were from India and Australia while there were 39 Sri Lankans and 29 West Indians on the list. When asked about the non-inclusion of Pakistan players, a franchise representative, on the condition of anonymity, told Mumbai Mirror: "It is not surprising. That has been the trend of late, anyway. The presence of the Pakistan players creates security concerns for the team and there is no guarantee that the franchises would be willing to buy them if they are in the auction." The IPL governing council also revealed the base prices for the players - the minimum price is Rs 30 Lakhs while the maximum base price is Rs 2 Crore. Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Karthik and Amit Mishra were some of the Indian players in the 2 Crore bracket which also had international players like Jacques Kallis, Mitchell Johnson, Kevin Pietersen and Brendon McCullum. "It will be fascinating to see each team pit its plans and tactics against the other seven, in what promises to be an eventful auction. Switchblade Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 IPL-7 – Keep the tournament transparent, say marketers http://www.exchange4media.com/54388_ipl-7-%E2%80%93-keep-the-tournament-transparent-say-marketers.html The India Premiere League (IPL), which was surrounded by controversies of match fixing and money laundering last year, is expected to get underway in April 2014 for the seventh season. As is known, three players of the Rajasthan Royals team were found to be indulging in spot fixing with the bookies last year. The investigation also revealed that owner of the team, Raj Kundra, was also allegedly involved in betting. Apart from this Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI Chief N Srinivasan and CEO of Chennai Super Kings was also allegedly involved in betting. Still the board reportedly made profits worth Rs 385 crore from IPL-6. This year, BCCI has appointed ‘integrity officers’ to each team to prevent any unwanted events like spot fixing. Apart from this, the Board has also decided to educate players in local languages on how bookies operate to help them eliminate any fixing possibilities. Will the marketers associated with the sport respond positively and will the move transform into more marketers getting associated with the tournament on and off the screen? ‘Fixing free’ tournament Almost all marketers have welcomed the efforts taken by the BCCI to make the game more transparent. Analysts feel that this will enhance trust among the sponsors. They also observe that the players playing in the tournament are from domestic level and they might not be aware of the bookie cluster. Therefore, creating awareness among them is a healthy initiative. In parallel, as far as the brand image is concerned, marketers feel that the fixing allegations are on individuals and some team owners and, therefore, it is unlikely the brand ‘IPL’ would take a hit as cricket is anyways followed in India. But marketers are keen that the event for the sake of viewership should be ‘fixing free’. Indra Nooyi, Global Chief, PepsiCo had recently spoken at the WEF in Davos that the company wants to be associated with a sport without controversy. Pepsi is the presenting sponsor of the IPL till 2017, and has committed almost Rs 400 crore for the event. Reportedly, there was huge pressure from the corporate giant to make the event transparent and free of controversies. Marketers we spoke to have shared mixed responses over the development and responses have varied from brand to brand. Most of them want to wait and watch before they finally display their choices of participation in the tournament. “Consumer product is different from a management product. Cricket is a huge sport in India and IPL is a good platform to market. As far as controversies and our participation are concerned it would depend on the nature of the controversy. If subsequent affects are felt then we will take a decision accordingly. But for a brand like ours consumer attention matters a lot,” said Shireesh Joshi, COO, Strategic Marketing Group, Godrej. Senior observers have said that although cynicism regarding the tournament will prevail but brands would continue to invest in case mass marketing is the objective. Chandroo Kalroo, CMO, TTK Prestige mentioned, “Fatigue is creeping within the tournament. The viewership though rises towards the end of the tournament; the association of a brand primarily depends upon the relevance and context of advertising. I don’t think that allegations of spot fixing will dent marketing. Everything is not fixed and viewers know that. Spot fixing allegations will therefore not make them (sponsors) go away, unless viewers stop watching it. Marketers do not buy property, they buy eyeballs.” On the other side there are also some marketers who feel that dignity of the tournament matters a lot. Brands getting associated with a team would go for extra scrutiny. In that case Rajasthan Royals might have to try a little harder. Recent reports of Lalit Modi winning RCA elections and in that case BCCI imposing a ban on the board has driven a new pulse of controversies. Marketers are vocal of the fact that fixing of matches affects the viewership to a great extent which in turn also affects sponsorships. Sanjay Tripathi, Senior EVP-Marketing, HDFC Life Insurance said, “Nobody would like to be cheated. IPL is watched because the teams playing are of equal strengths and therefore result is unpredictable. If the match is fixed, forget a marketer even the viewer would not watch it. I will keep a policy of wait and watch over the initiatives taken by the BCCI. If viewership is robust and the matches transparent then we may go ahead with our participation.” Sandipan Ghosh, CMO, Ruchi Soya industries said, “If there is no integrity people will not watch IPL anyways. Like in the case of WWE, TVRs started coming down once people came to know that it was staged. If there are no people, brands would anyways not sponsor it. Therefore, steps taken by BCCI to make the tournament transparent are welcome, but association of brands would depend upon the results which come out.” For some brands IPL would not matter at all, citing high costs and irrelevant context. They would, therefore, not be associated with the brand citing their past experiences. For some brands, the association with IPL (or its broadcaster Set Max) has not been very fruitful and hence, they might not continue with the brand in the future. One amongst them is Nissan Motors.
