The Outsider Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Am not one for mixing formats, but agree with BG that our domestic one day standards are dire. Won't take them seriously even for a bit. Would much rather make ODI selections based on Ranji.
G_B_ Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Mohit Sharma, now there is somebody selected on merit.
G_B_ Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 as for Jadhav. I am afraid he comes from an unfashionable team.... what he needed was Pawar contesting elections to be head of Maha cricket association rather than the Mumbai cricket association.... Need a big ipl performance to get noticed.
mancalledsting Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 There are plenty of exceptions to the aesthetics and technique rule. I can list likes of Chanderpaul' date=' Dhoni, Bevan, Steve Waugh etc. Conversely I can list Manjrekar, Ramprakash, etc. who failed though they had supposedly better technique. It's the results which matter and Jadhav has done what he was asked to at domestic level. There's no guarantee he will succeed at intl level but at the very least he deserves to be given a chance to find out whether he fails or makes it in intl cricket. He should be given a couple of odi series to press his case and if he fails then you can go back to the next in line.[/quote'] I disagree that Steve Waugh and Shiv Chanderpaul had bad technique. Yes, they are aesthetically ugly but for example if you watch how Chanderpaul gets his feet into line and his weight forward and back- it's all text book. Only his set up at the crease is unorthodox. Dhoini's bad technique does come back to bite him on truly fast ODI wickets eg South African ones faced on our last two tours there.

If everyone else in that division is still not scoring as much as say Jadhav that means he's outperforming his peers and needs to be given a shot. After all you can only play who's in front of you. Rahane and Rohit have shown an inability to pace their innings or rotate strike in odis and you simply can't be successful if you can't do that. Jadhav may not be pleasing to the eye but maybe he's like Fairbrother or Morgan and knows how to rotate the strike instead of playing a bunch of dot balls.
Old guy Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Mohit Sharma, now there is somebody selected on merit. Yeah performed in 2 seasons then got dropped after getting fair chance to prove himself If only we had more examples of selections like him That is actually job well done by selectors
The Outsider Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Steve Waugh and Chanderpaul having poor technique! :headshake: Specially, Waugh. Look at his innings in the 90s against seriously good pace bowling to see his near perfect back and across movement.

I have not seen him bat much but technique was never in question maybe talent was when compared to other Aussies but he was a fighter from what I have heard and true great of game

I've never seen him bat. My point was that don't take domestic one day performances seriously. The skew in average can happen due to hazaar reasons. Again, not saying Jadhav is a poor batsman.

Same with Dhoni in odis though every other batsman looks better than him. Results is what should matter and nothing else.

Especially when the current lot aren't doing much.

Still get goose bumps at the prospect of watching him in the '95 series in WI. PS: Gooch also averaged 50+ and Dravid 49.xx but their number of matches was quite low.

I don't find Chanderpaul aesthetic, but not so with Waugh. Would have loved to have a Backfoot game like him. Regarding the broader point about Jadhav, as Sabby said he had a killer Ranji season as well and on that basis he surely deserves a chance, but not on ODD exploits which are a farce.

Ninties sound depressing :haha: But yeah all commentators ever say about him is that he was not great puller of ball so fended them off and scored tons of runs Also comparisons with his brother who looked classy while batting ...this is reason I don't get into topics I have no idea about :haha:

Regarding the broader point about Jadhav, as Sabby said he had a killer Ranji season as well and on that basis he surely deserves a chance, but not on ODD exploits which are a farce. But you will face the same issue in FC/Ranji performances as well. Case in point Ravindra jadeja who averages nearly 50 with 3 triple 100s and we all know that record's laughable. I would go with List A cricket performances when selecting squad for odis as odis require a different skill set. In Tests you can play bunch of dot balls a la Rohit, rahane or Laxman but that approach won't work in odis. If domestic cricket has odi/List A cricket select odi squad based on those performances.

Still have a hard time trying to make sense that a lot on this board did not watch much cricket in the 90s. 80s I can understand. But yeah, Mark was definitely more 'classy' in the conventional sense. No arguments there. Steve was the test batsman I aspired to be given my fail in natural tailunt like Lara and Tendulkar. However, even replicating his quick back and across movement proved too much against probably 110-120 trundlers. Forget about what he did to Ambrose in '95. The guy did all but cry on the field.
